GPL crash to desktop

by Tim Harriso » Thu, 05 Dec 2002 08:09:51

Hi,

I've recently reinstalled GPL and downloaded lots of the new downloads.  The
problem is I seesm to be getting lots of CTD's.  I can watch a race and flit
between***pits and camera viws for hours on end without a problem but
whenever I get into a***pit to drive it will get anywhere from 200yds to
half a lap and then dump me back to windows.  It doesn't matter which track
or car I'm in either.  I never had this particular problem with the last
install (but then again I have a different graphics card and M/B) and I have
installed all the correct patches, CPU fix and Direct3D updates.

Any ideas?

Many thanks,

Tim

There are two fairly common causes for this.

Check your files are not read-only. If you copied the install from a CD they
may be.

If you are using NTFS, allow indexing for the gpl folder. You can do this by
going to the folder properties & clicking the advanced button.

If you can view replays I'd guess the former, since the NTFS indexing
problem usually just makes gpl CTD at the first menu screen ime.

There's a common CTD problem with cars that have 16bit arm textures.

If you search the rsc forum at http://www.racesimcentral.net/ for 4bit
arms you should find a link to replacement arm textures which hopefully
will fix it for you.

I've not had the 4-bit arms problem or had to fix anything using them, so I
can't be sure, but I thought that only applied to 3dfx cards?

Hi Tim,

Tried re-installing or updating DirectX? This fixed a recent crashing
problem I was having...to the desktop that is...didn't stop me crashing
the car...:-)
