GPL crash to desktop help please!

HELP!!

Trying to narrow down the problem on running GPL on my brother's
computer so he can play the Christmas present I game him-

Downloaded and applied the patch to the game and played while keeping
the CD in the drive [don't know if you need to or not] and kept getting
the 'crash to desktop' problem during the first lap at Spa during
practice laps.
[Using my Thrustmaster Pro Digital 2 wheel]

Sierra responded that it was the Turtle Beach sound drivers Dell uses,
so we made the changes they suggested in the control panel.  Seemed to
work fine for a few laps, but changed to a different track and after a
while it crashed again.

Just to see I disconnected the wheel and drove with the keyboard for as
long as I could [pretty damn hard!] and got a couple of laps at Spa in,
some at Watkins, and most a lap at the Ring before I gave up- all with
no 'crash to desktop'.

Is there a known problem with the TM Pro Digital 2 wheel, or the
drivers?  Any ideas what the problem could be?

Any help in finding a solution would be appreciated.  We want to enjoy
this classic.  He is looking to buy a wheel and we would like to know
if we need to avoid the TM Pro Dig. 2

DELL computer:
Pentium III 700
128 MB Ram
32 MB NVidia TNT M64 AGP
Turtle Beach Montego II A3D 320v sound
Windows 98

GPL:
All features ahead and in mirrors on
All effects on
Detail Bias in middle
Mirror Detail full
Trackside objects all

Tim,

Have you tried d/l'ing new NPD drivers/applets f. TM?  New sound drivers f.
TB?  New sound drivers f. Dell?

--Steve Smith

P.O. You don't need the CD in the drive w. the U.S. version.

Steve,

No, we did not try any of the above but I will work with him to try
some of those solutions and see what happens.  Thanks for the info,
Steve.
