*** Crash to desktop problems with Nascar 3

by James Litt » Wed, 22 Sep 1999 04:00:00

Hello,

I bought N3 last week and have had mixed results getting N3 to work.
I would greatly appreciate anybody's assistance.

SYSTEM:
PII-450Mhz (not overclocked)
128 MB RAM
Asus P2B motherboard
Windows 98
Diamond Monster 2  12MB (not o/c)
Diamond V550 (not o/c)
SB Live Value

PROBLEM:
When starting and playing with the options, everything is fine, but
after selecting a track and then going to a training session or going
to the track for an event the sim immediately crashes to desktop.
This does not occur at all the tracks.

**Using 3dfx:
Works:
Atlanta, Homestead-Miami, Las Vegas, Michigan, New Hampshire, North
Carolina, Phoenix, Pikes Peak, Sears Point, Watkins Glen

Doesn't Work:
Bristol, Bristol-Night, California, Darlington, Dover Downs, Gateway,
Indianapolis, IRP, Lowe's, Lowe's-Night, Martinsville, Memphis,
Milwaukee, Myrtle Beach, Nazereth, Richmond-Night, South Boston,
Talladega, Texas

**Using direct3d:
Nothing works.  The computer locks up between the track selection
screen and the event screen.

**Using software:
This has brought the best results.  I have been able to use all the
tracks, but I'm still getting some crashes to desktops, although much
less frequently.

Note:  when I crash to desktop, this is the message I receive.

Windows 98 Version 4.10.1998

006361a4 006361a8

ACTIONS TAKEN:

Used Norton to check if system is in proper working order. yes
Full install and partial install didn't change results.
Up-to-date drivers for video and sound cards, as well as older
versions did not fix the problem.
--Used Nvidia Detonator and Diamond v550 drivers
--Used 3dfx reference and Diamond Monster 2 drivers
Installing N3 on different drives did nothing to fix problem.
Moving video and sound cards on motherboard did nothing.

Again, I would really appreciate if anybody could help or offer
advice...other than taking a hammer to the machine. :)

by the way, is the direct3d option selecting the direct3d from the v2
or from the v550?  Is there a way to change it between the two?

Thanks,
James Littek

Go into the Direct X directry and look for the DX diagontices and run the
tests. I would bet that you have an out of date driver.

You always see unsupported drivers in DX, even with the newest drivers
installed.  I am also having problems with N3 crashing.  I have sent an debug
dump to papy for analysis.

I have the same the same system and N3 works perfectly in 3Dfx up to
1024X768. Games lock ups in D3D 1024X768, but only I start the "race"
session. N3 needs the most recent drivers and DirectX 6.1.

    I am having the same problem on k6-2 450 with a 3dfx voodoo3, 192 mb
ram, fic pa-2013 motherboard, sb live value. Sent a request to Sierra for
tech support and they told me to try everything that has been tried
already ie. Direct X drivers, video drivers etc...also to get rid of the
start up video, but nothing works. When I first installled the game last
week it worked ok but has crashed with more frequency to the point of not
being able to get in a whole lap.
I removed a voodoo2 to install the voodoo3 so I think I will try to
go back to v2 to eliminate the v3 card. If anyone has any suggestions
feel free...

Guys, I don't have the game yet, but I'm seeing a common factor here with all this crashing.

SB Live sound card.

Check it out.

I have the same system you do except for just 64 MB of SDRAM.  I made
sure that I installed Direct x 6.1 drivers, and removed any drivers for
glide when I removed my Voodoo2 prior to installing my Voodoo3 3000 AGP.
But I also had constant crashed back to my desktop.

I then uninstalled Nas3. Then reinstalled. Now I could get the game to
start, but I could only run at Atlanta. All other tracks caused the sim to
crash. I then deleted the track file, and just copied it from the CD,problem
solved.  For some reason,I wasn't getting a clean install.

Wow that is really weird. I have raced at about 2/3's of the tracks
in the game. I just do 10% races and start from the rear to drive
through the field. I do 5-8 races a night and never a problem.

I wonder what the swapfile settings are for people who are
having problems? This includes the amount of free disk
space.

I am having the same problem, except mine crashes to the desktop with
no error message, and only when I host a multiplayer game.  It happens
during the practice session after about 15 minutes.

I have a PII/400, 128MB, TNT, SBlive.

"only when I host a multiplayer game."

That is exactly where I'm crashing.  Sitting in practice as others are
joining and I'm in the chat screen.  Time dosen't seem to be an issue, nor
the number to people on.
5 minutes with 16 joined.....crash to desktop
12 minutes with 29 joined.....crash to desktop

also, only crashed on thursday night (2 times) and sunday night (4 times
trying to see how many could join).  (I included <TEST> in my host name to
let people know there were possible problems)

Some good news!
I did have 26 join and 22 finish at dega in a 10% race with only a couple
showing any warping.
