RASCAR: After Today's Race - Upgrade Time!

by John Simmon » Sun, 10 Nov 2002 21:03:50

I'm going to start installing all my new hardware (Asus A7V8X, XP1900,
512mb PC2700, Audigy, Radeon 9700 Pro with 6193 drivers).  I've been
lurking on the applicable newsgroups and am kinda weirded out with all
the reports of instabilitiy/incompatibility where the motherboard and
video card are concerned, but I have to wonder exactly how many of the
people that are having these problems are just plain stupid and haven't
taken the time to read their documentation...

I'm replacing an Abit KT7, Athlon 1ghz, 768mb PC133, sbLive, Radeon
8500.

The whole point to this exercise is to get better frame rates in NR2K2
with more eye candy - right now I have trackside objects set to minimal,
so I would really like to see what I'm missing, but I can't stand frame
rates lower than 30.  I also hope to be able to bump up the cars drawn
ahead/behind, and set track distance to 100%.

I'm currently running at 1600x1200x32 in D3D, but might take that down
to 1024x768 and try out the fsaa and anisotropic settings, and I might
even try OpenGL again (I got really sucky frame rates with the 8500 if I
recall correctly, but I don't know why that would be the case).

If anyone knows any nifty 9700 tweaking secrets, bios settings, or
driver recommendations, I woiuld be happy to hear about it.

Got me there, I run in OGL on my 8500LE and and get roughly the same FPS
as I do in D3D, but I run in 1024x768 as I sit a little too far away
from my screen to run at 1600x1200 on my 19" monitor

"but I run in 1024x768 as I sit a little too far away from my screen to run

Not sure why you find this an issue.  The object are the same size in NR2002
no matter which resolution you run at, there is just more pixels displayed.
I run at 1600*1200 on 19" with no issues.

I run an 8500 in OpenGL and never had any issues with frame rates.  I
suspect it more the impact of your processor than the video card.  I run on
a 1600+ AMD XP.

Huh....could have sworn the instruments were harder to read, must be

I'll have to double check now :)  But most objects are the same size.
My father runs at 1660*1200 and find it easier to read the instruments at
that res than a lower one with AA on.

Only women and sissies need to refer to their instruments. Real men rip
all the guages out and go by smell...

Lol, good luck with your upgrade - going to be doing a little upgrading myself. Replacing my Athlon XP1600+ this afternoon with my new XP 2400+  and Alpha Pal 8045 heatsink/fan.  Finally breaking the 2ghz barrier :).

Yeah, but what about the epilepsy inducing refresh rate at that resolution?
Some older (cough) 19'' monitor are stuck at 60 Hz at 1600X1200... It find
it hard to stay a long time in front of the PC and the graphic seem a bit
more "blurry". I'd rather use 1280X960 with Quincux AA (+OGL).

Ah well I have a new 19" and my father runs a 21" so refresh rates and not
an issue when you can easily push 85-90hz :-)
Personally other than the gauges I like lower res with the AA but the detail
is crisper at 1600 for those smaller objects.

I might be able to make it, too.

But, why oh why does my 1st sat off in weeks have to be Phoenix????????

It's probably because that higher resolution give more crisp and sharp text
and numbers on those gauges in the***pit, while AA kinda dithers and makes
them a little fuzzy.

I personally prefer a very sharp and grainy image on racing simulations
because of the added effects which are a bonus while racing (anything fuzzy
in racing is bad, you need clear focus even it means having hard-edges),
which is why AA for me is garbage :)

For other type of games, it's a different concept.  If you want AA while
racing just cross your eyes!! LOL

Upgraded from:
  Abit KT7
  AMD 1ghz Thunderbird
  758mb PC133 RAM
  ATI Radeon 8500 64mb
  SB Live!
In NR2K2, I had 75% track, 20 cars ahead, minimal trackside objects

Upgraded to:
  Asus A7V8X
  AMD XP1900
  512mb PC2700 RAM
  ATI Radeon 9700 Pro
  SB Audigy
In NR2K2, I changed to 100% dtrack, 30 cars ahead, all trackside
objects

In both instances, I was/am using 1600x1200x32 with no FSAA or
Anisotropic stuff.

My frame rates went from 24-60 to 50-120, depending on the track (in roof
view).

I'm happy about that. :)

In GPL, the replays happen at super speed.  Does anyone know how to fix
that?
