Hi just purchased a Stealth II rendition board and was wondering if anyone
out there has gotten it to work with Nascar1999 or Indycar racing II
rendition version.

Yes, I just got Cart (ICR2) to work in DOS/Rendition.  I have a Stealth II
also.  It works and looks much better than the Win95 version. Alison Hind's
site has the link to thenecessary patch and other info.

NR1999 should run fine with Stealth II.  I have the same card and I
have no problem running NR1999.

Assuming you're already running from DOS and using the right batch
file to start the Rendition versions...

   Use V2dosfix from Bjorn's 3D World (www.bjorn3d.com).  I never got
the ICR2 mirrors right for my Thriller, though.  :(

Also, I'm surprised the Rendition version of Papyrus NR99 isn't
V2x00-ready.

I haven't minded too much until now, but, gosh darn it, is there
a way to increase the brightness output from the Stealth II S220
card?  I'd been letting Viper Racing run with my 3Dfx card, but
when on a whim I let it use the Stealth and noticed that the
benchmark had a 10fps increase, I decided that I really really
gotta find out how to fix this damn thing.

Likewise for GPL, the frame rate in Rendition mode is 7fps
higher than in 3Dfx, but everything is all contrast and no
brightness.  Lines on the track begin to "sparkle" in the
distance (and no, this isn't the anti-aliasing problem --
it's just that the lines are gleaming and the track is dark,
so when the lines break up, there's a lot of little glowing
bits in the road); the backside of Spa is impossible to
navigate because it's too dark; the racing groove and track
surface at Kyalami are the same color, thus indistinguishable.

None of these problems exists when the 3Dfx card is running.
It looks so much better, not from any difference in 3D features
(it actually has less), but just because it's brighter and has
less contrast.  In Viper, the blue stripes on the walls in
Dundas positively GLOW with the Stealth's lack of brightness
but high contrast.

There's no monitor setting to fix it; I've already got it set
for maximum brightness.  You can't turn up brightness that isn't
there to start with!

Has anyone noticed the same problems, and has anyone discovered
a way to improve the output?  I hate to be forced to use 3Dfx
when the Rendition mode is so much smoother in frame rate...
Diamond tech support has not responded to email on the subject.

And yes, I am using the 1.36 BIOS for the card and latest drivers.

GPL and Viper are fine on my Stealth S220.  IncontrolTools95 I believe had a
tab in Display properties to to set the Gama and Brightness you might try
that.  Other than that it could be the wallpaper/theme or color depth on
your desktop your using I've had that make my display darker than normal.
If your set to higher than 16bpp try setting it to 16bpp.

Yeah, I've noticed this too, but since setting the brightness higher
it is OK for GPL.

But this higher gamma makes my desktop much too bright ;)    I just
have to swap it whenever i play gpl.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned elsewhere....My Thriller seems to
emit a high pitched whining sound if run at 16bpp. The reason I think
it is the 16bpp setiing that causes the problem is because when i
alter the desktop to 32bpp, the sound immediately stops. It also stops
if I use my 3dfx card - eg by using a 3d screensaver.

So I'm getting into the habit of changing the settings just before i
play gpl. Bit of a pain...but what a game!!! worth the effort.

Nope, it's at 16-bit, and there is no such gamma and brightness
control, at least not in InControlTools 98.  Either that or I'm
entirely unable to find it.  That would be ideal, naturally.

Yeah, ICT98 dropped the Gamma/Brightness adjustment for some reason.  I have
no other ideas.  My son's monitor (old 14") was the same way with the
Stealth but using different bpp <come to think of it he ended up in 32bpp>
he was able to get it brighter.  When I upgrade my monitor I gave him my 15"
and now he has no problems regardless of bpp used.

Of course, the games set their own color depth, so it doesn't
really matter.  I don't THINK this is a monitor problem because,
like I said, the output from the 3Dfx card is just fine.

Maybe I should just get a 12 or 16MB Voodoo2 card; surely that
would give a better frame rate in GPL and Viper Racing than the
4MB Rendition V2100 in the Stealth, wouldn't it?

ICR2 and N2 (which I almost never play anymore anyway) look
and run decently enough with the Rendition, so I could just
keep it only for those two games and use 3Dfx for the rest,
if I got a faster 3Dfx board ...
