LWFF Problems

by tone » Wed, 07 Mar 2001 02:07:57

Hi there,

I have the Red LWFF wheel that's about a year old (i.e. it's not the new
version) and it's hasn't given me any grief until this past weekend.  I have
it plugged into the USB port (always have..) and am running Win 98 SE on a
P3 1 GHz.   I always launch my games (N3, N4, etc..) using the the Logitech
Wingman software and preceded to do so this Saturday, however, this time N3
didn't recognize that I had the wheel attached and wouldn't let me calibrate
it from within the game.  I rebooted and always during the boot process, the
wheel will turn by itself from side to side when the second green light
comes on (the first green light always being on as long as it's powered up).
Well, this time, the wheel didn't move when the second green light came on
indicating that something was amiss.  I checked the wheel in the control
pannel and sure enough, it is detected and the status states that is "OK".
However, when you hit on properties to calibrate, the Wingman calibration
screen comes up but turning the wheel or depressing either the gas or brake
peddles does not have any effect.  The inputs to the wheel do not appear to
be seen by the calibration screen..  Anyway, I tried uninstalling the
drivers and reinstalling and that did not work.  I also installed the wheel
and software on my fiance's computer and it installed perfectly fine, but
acts the exact same way as on mine (i.e. windows shows that it's there and
the status is "OK" and both green lights are illuminated..  but it doesn't
work..).

Any thoughts, comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated..  I'm
thinking the unit is toast and I'm trying to decide on a suitable
replacement.  I kinda have it narrowed down to an ACT-Labs force feedback
with shifter (on sale for $189.00 presently) or a TSW-2 setup with the
clutch (very expensive though... and they are backlogged so it's 3-5 weeks
for delivery..).   Any comments or recommendations regarding a replacement
would also be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much in advance..

Take care,

Tony

It's gotta be machanical.  Check the power supply voltage.  Trouble-shoot
internally if you can.  Look for a loose connection (which is a likely
culprit when it goes bad suddenly).  If *nothing* works (wheel, pedals),
it's probably not a pot.

Check to see if in N3 the 'use optimized' driver is selected.  For the
LWFF you
have to choose the Direct Input option.

Thanks for the input but it's not a problem related to any specific
game/sim.  Windows recognizes the wheel is there and shows an 'OK' status
but it cannot be calibrated (no inputs are seen at all..).  It's like the
old cliche..  The lights are on but nobody's home...

Take care,

Tony

I don't know if this will help or not but here goes.  I too have a LWFF Red
1.to 1/2 years old.  I find that if I plug in the Logi after bootup to
Windows I go in the the joystick control panel applet and the wheel shows as
plugged in and o.k. but will not take inputs and will not be recognized in
games.  Try highlighting it, hitting properties and check then uncheck the
box that references combined axis.  I am set to go after I do this.  Don't
know what else to suggest.  Good Luck, I love my wheel and would hate to
have to replace it.

Sounds like you need the patch from the Logitech site www.wingmanteam.com to
enable calibration of the LWFF on fast processors. You can also read about
this problem on Alison Hine's site where she describes building her new
system

Talon,

That's all well & good, but if you don't have separate brake & throttle axes
in GPL, you're giving away a second or more at most tracks.  The 'Ring, for
example, is almost undriveable.  Also hard hit: Solitude, Crystal, Imola,
Rouen, Spa, Holland, Monte Carlo, Riverside, the O'Ring, Louden--a long
list.  Other tracks--Silverstone, Elkhart, most ovals--are less affected,
but still....

LWFF Problems

I wasn't recommending using a combined axis, only that that is the only way
I can get my LWFF back to windows recognizing it.  After having done this
little exercise I can select combined or separate if the game calls for it.
What this seems to do is "wake" the controller so that windows will see it.
