Radeon or GF2?

Radeon or GF2?

by Ryan » Tue, 05 Jun 2001 11:47:00

Hi,
I'm upgrading a machine that was given to me and that I would like to use
for GPL and Nascar 4.  It does not have an AGP slot, but for the time being
I cannot afford the kind of motherboard and processor that I would really
like to buy.  Anyways, ATI makes the Radeon for the PCI bus, but does Nvidia
make the GeForce2 for the PCI bus as well??  Will an AGP card fit/work in
the PCI bus?  I have a Voodoo2 12 meg in it now, but N4 looks like ***and
runs like it too.  Thanks for any suggestions!

wouldn't the radeon be a pretty high price to pay for PCI motherboard??? better
to get a motherboard that you could upgrade processor and memory later don't
you think?

or maybe go with a cheapo just to get by vid card

(Don't gimme NO***in E-mail)

i haven't come across any PCI GF2 cards... only TNT2... the radeon was the
best PCI card i've seen.... 16bit performance it's slower than GF2MX, but is
slightly quicker on 32bit performance.

but..... given the board has no AGP slot, i'm assuming that it's probably
pretty slow all-round... so a TNT2 would probably more than suffice, and
TNT2 PCI cards are easy enough to come by. the system's probably slow enough
that a radeon would be overkill where a TNT2 would be more than enough.

no they make em in PCI.  but maybe only in the gf2mx flavour.  i don't think
N$(oops 4) will look much better.

not knowing a whole lot about the ati range and not knowing your current
set-up, i will agree with the others and suggest a CPU upgrade.  sure a new
vidcard will help a little but new CPU and RAM will help a LOT more.  save for
an extra couple of weeks or so, live off sandwiches and stop buying *** and
get a new system.

One thing to think about: ATI has a well-deserved reputation for poor
drivers (and very slow updates to them), and the company is currently
experiencing some rather ugly internal changes. They'll likely survive,
but their reputation for drivers isn't going to improve any time soon.
I'd steer clear of ATI if there are other alternatives.

That has not been my experience.  I have owned a TnT, a GeForce 2MX, and
a 32 meg Radeon, and I think the Radeon has been the most trouble free
of all three.  ATI apparently did a poor job with the drivers for Rage
and older cards, and they haven't shaken that reputation yet.  I have
also heard lots of complaints about the All-In-Wonder products.  However
if you just get a plain old Radeon with no frills, the drivers work fine
with most games.  Admittedly, N4 is one of the exceptions - there is
only one version of the Radeon OpenGL drivers that works with N4.
Nevertheless, I swear I always had more trouble with nVIDIA drivers than
I have with Radeon drivers.
