RAS buys CART - Where do we race?

Dateline January 2004 - CART goes bankrupt and RAS buys it for a dollar.
Tony George dies (or alternatively, as a nod to some here, returns to the
underworld whence he came)  everybody kisses and makes up. And North
American Open Wheel Racing is back under one big tent.  The question is
where do we race?

It's sort of on topic because I'd like to create the ideal season ( that
should be) once the CART Mod for F1 200x comes out.

I agree with Mario that what made the series the best was the diversity of
the tracks; Street circuits, Road courses, Short ovals and Superspeedways.
But which ones?  Historical venues or newer markets?
The series should be American based but how for a field should we go?
Europe? Japan?  Brazil?

Here are my ideas:

Indy (obviously) with Milwaukee to follow.
I like the idea of starting the season at Phoenix.  It's got lots of history
and it's a quirky short oval that makes everyone think.
Michigan also has history on it's side and almost always has a good race. It
's close Detriot and would really allow the cars to stretch there legs and
tax the engines for 500 miles.  Of course then do you need California as
well?
Got to have Long Beach.
The Molson Indy's are hugely popular up here in Canada but the tracks don't
make for great racing.  I'd say keep Toronto and ditch Vancouver.  Montreal
provides better racing but do you really need to race at an F1 circuit?
Keep Surfers Paradise.  Who doesn't like going to Australia?
Motegi I guess so, if you want Japanese engines, but how about Fuji instead?
Got to keep Mexico City, but Monterrey, although popular always seemed an
odd circuit to me.
Road America is one of the best road courses in the world. Ditto Laguna
Seca but do you need Mid-Ohio?  It never seemed to be a good fit for Champ
Cars.
Sears Point, Road Atlanta, Watkins Glen (the proper track) and Mosport are
all new possibilities.
Europe? That's a tough one.  We'd always be second fiddle to F1 and the
theory is it dilutes American interest and makes it hard to sell the series
to American Sponsors.  Still the idea of them at Spa and Brands GP is
appealing.

Number of races?  I'd say 19 is a maximum you could squeeze in.  So my
season would be:

Phoenix International Raceway
Long Beach
Indy
Milwaukee
Toronto
Cleveland
Laguna Seca
Surfers Paradise
Fuji
Michigan
Road America
Kansas
Eurospeedway(Lausitz)
Spa
Brands Hatch GP
Texas
Mexico City
Rio Oval
California

Not a bad schedule, although I'd like to see another road course between
Long Beach and Indy. Miami maybe? Oh and ditch Texas, that place is a
deathtrap for open wheel cars.

The only thing unanswered is whether Dave Henrie is under investigation
regarding the mysterious demise of Mr. G...

Let me guess.  You are from Toronto right?  How about ditch Toronto
and keep Vancouver.  Two weeks ago I was in Toronto for the CART race
and this weekend I was in Vancouver of course (yes, I am from
Vancouver).  The Toronto circuit is rather boring leaving little to
the drivers' skills and everything to the setups.  Vancouver is a
better mix of both where drivers pay the price for their tiniest
mistakes.

Montreal is definitely better than Toronto and perhaps better than
Vancouver (although I hate to admit it).  Given that Montreal has F1
(re: your argument about CART being second fiddle to F1), I have to go
with:
1- Vancouver
2- Montreal
2- Toronto

Andre

All in all, I like your schedule but move Cleveland after Milwakee,
then Vancouver, Laguna Seca, etc....

Doesn't matter.  The posting of the schedule will be overwhelmed by an ***
quantity of posts concerning RASCAR.  None of the teams will show up for the
races because they didn't know.

Firstly.........
If you want to make it an international series then you *must* have a
selection of international tracks - this also aids in building popularity
for the series and provides a focus point for those fans who follow their
countrymen in the CART series.
Therefore it would be essential to retain Australia (because of the Team
Green connection). You would also have to include at least one South
American track, because of the number of drivers from that continent,
Britain should be represented and also Japan, where apparently there is a
reasonably strong following for CART.

Should you decide to base the entire season within the continental United
States then you will suffer a downturn in interest from the international
audience and you cannot afford to do that.

Secondly.............
You should go all-out to acquire at least one current, successful, Formula
One driver for your next season.
Preferably Mr. Schumacher but, failing him, someone like Rubens or Kimi or
even get Jacques to make a comeback.
The most lucrative season ever in CART history was the one in which Nigel
Mansell won the championship.
See if you can regain lost ground.

Bruce.

I disagree.  Vancouver is a dreadful circuit when it comes to racing.  There's
nowhere whatsoever to pass on that track effectively.  Toronto at least has
turn 3.  Turn 6 would be an overtaking zone at Vancouver if not for the
aero-push you get behind someone in turn 5.

But Montreal is better than either of those places.  ;)

Actually I'm from B.C.  And I've been to a few Vancouver Indy's.  I said
Toronto because I was thinking of keeping a Canadian presence, the course is
better than Vancouver, trying to keep the right number of Street circuits
and Toronto has more money Molson clout etc.  I guess the last couple are
more real world concerns and not important in a fantasy sim thread.

I do agree that Molson Indy Vancouver has a great atmosphere.  CART  is
really appreciated.  Everyone loves coming to Vancouver. And it makes a ton
of money, unlike other venues.  But really you have to admit it's a crappy
course to actually race on.

If we're going all fantasy then how about Westwood.  Now there was a track!!
There was talk back in the SCGT days that some one was going to make it.
Anybody know anything about that?

PS Hey Melandre do you know what's going on with Merritt?   They announced
it two years ago now.  I read about it first in Autosport.  And they
allegedly broke ground last year but I haven't heard boo about it since.
