... finding the Monza of 1967 boring as hell?

I mean, it is flat, only three corners and very fast.

Monza is the closest we get to oval racing here in Europe...

How people can spend hundred of hours trying to brake that 1:26 barrier
or whatever, is beyond me. When there are so many tracks driveworthy in
GPL...

And the hosts use it all the time... Strange.

Monza kind of levels the field because it's relatively easier overall than
most of the other tracks.  So you get more competitive, and therefore
interesting, races online.

The layout of Monza is quite simple. The corners (there are 5
actually) aren't simple. After thousands of laps I still can't hit
that magical 1:26 (barely can drive in the 1:27 actually) and that
fascinates me.
Driving some laps, comparing them again and again with GPLDump and
ReplayAnalyzer... well, I can imagine that that sounds boring to some
people, but I think that's what racing is all about. Finding those
tenths of seconds.

Don't get me wrong, I also drive and enjoy other tracks, especially
the Ring is my favorite one, but hotlapping on the Ring isn't fun for
me. Just 1 mistake, and you have to drive 8 long minutes again to try
it again...

Well, you are forgetting the Online obstacles. That is, the other 17
people who dance like spiders with each other in the air while I try
to avoid them.

Hockenheim (in more modern sims) sometimes gives me that impression.

But in gpl, Silverstone, Rouen, Monaco, Kyalami, and a few others bore
me more. I think because they are hard to get a good rhythm on (at
least for me). And Mexico might be better except the tires pop up a
tad late on my system- like, when you are right on them. Ruins it for
me.

I like Watkins Glen, Zandvoort, Monza, Spa... and I also like this new
one, Osterring (sp), which has some very challenging braking to it-
deep in curves, etc. And I don't mind the darn poles as much as the
tires at Mexico!

Anyway, Monza has something indefineable- I think it is in it's
rhythm, which really allows one to lock in to it.

Keep in mind Monza is fun online because it is not as chaotic for
sparring with other cars, and passing is not too difficult.

Re: ovals- I am not a fan of ovals racing- well, except for Indy and
Michigan, perhaps- where a sort of "quantity is its own quality" thing
takes over... but in general, I think they are racers tracks. They are
all about the minutae of interaction with other drivers that is
apparent from behind the wheel, but hardly apparent to the audience.
And the idea of just trying to break records on ovals- or even
qualifying- is too tedious for me.

When I first pulled out of the pits at Monza, I found it literally
SCARY, not boring... (maybe it was the song of the Ferrari with the
volume way too loud and the power I was supposed to do something
with...) It's hard to explain, but it's very fast and very unforgiving
at the same time - screaming down a long straightaway knowing there's
a pretty tricky turn at the end of it, and that if you slow too soon,
you may as well park it now and if you slow too late... well....

Hangin' the ass-end out around Ascari is a rush and approaching the
old oval overpass is quite pucker inducing when you're in traffic or
out of shape at all...

I love it, and I'm still looking for 1:30.... gonna need stress
counseling to shoot for 1:26 - <shudder>

I agree !!  I will NEVER join a Monza race.  Who likes turning right only??
Spa (the old Spa) is bad also.  Its a shame those are the 2 most popular
tracks on VROC.  IMO The Ring is by far the best, with Rouen and Mosport
also ranking well.

Hooray! Welcome to the "Monza Is Boring" club. So it's easy to
remember the layout? Same for the Glen. It's fast? So is Spa. It's
historic? So is the Ring. It makes for a close race? So does
Silverstone. All of them more interesting by some way.

Personally, I don't often dash around Monza. I'd put it ahead of only
Zandvoort, Kyalami and Mexico in my playing frequency. It is, as you
say, just soooo boring.

Monza is not so boring when you are running 2 sec a lap slower in the
hometown car

You're not the only one.  I don't like it much either.  I remember when I
was***starting out in GPL, I had some good battles there, but once you
get down to the 28's everyone drives pretty much the same and the race turns
into a parade.  Almost like a modern F1 race.  I dislike Kyalami for much
the same reason.  Monaco, Watkins Glen, and Mosport can also be parades, but
at least it's easy to make a mistake on those tracks.

No wonder you don't like Monza if you allways drive to the right at
the Ascari corner... And what don't you like about Spa?

which has is all: Easy to remember, fast, historic and close racing.

Monaco one of the least exciting? I don't really like Monaco for
online racing, too much accidents, but you surely can't say that
Monaco is not exciting? That damn chicane makes my heart beat twice as
fast every single time!
I agree fully with the rest of the list. Yesterday I was hotlapping on
the Ring. Had a beautiful fast lap, but blew it at the left-handed
corner after the long straight. If I had taken that corner right, it
would have been an 8:05-8:10 lap... now that was a thrill ride for me
:)

In case you hadn't notice, there are at least two left-handers at Monza.  Or
do you take a shortcut of some sort?

I would say:
1. Monza
2. Silverstone
3. Spa
4. Mexico
5. Watkins Glen
6. Kyalami
7. Mosport
8. Monaco
9. ?sterreichring
10. Brands Hatch
11. Nrburgring
12. Zandvoort
13. Rouen

I moved Nrburgring a bit up the list. It is just too long. Awesome. Lot's of
excellent turns, succession of turns, it's got everything in there. If you are fast
at Nrburgring, you'll be fast anywhere. But it is very difficult to work on driving
technique there because of the non-repetitive nature of the track. Rouen is my
favourite track, and it is really only the track that works very well with all car
classes. Different dimensions with different Formulas. Thank god they used this
track instead of the Bugatti track from -67!

Monaco is one of my favourites, it is a track that suits my technique, and I have
always been doing well there. In online races too, if you race with the right
people. :-)

GP length at Monaco??? I am in!  :-)))

And I'd probably want a GP length at the ring as well!

I want online races with realistic damage!!!
