F1 2000 & a few nice touches.

by D. \ » Fri, 31 Mar 2000 04:00:00

I spent a while tweaking with graphics trying to find the optimum balance
between FPS & quality, and I noticed a few nice touches...

-Disc brakes glow under heavy braking!   very cool :-)
-Most drivers have semi-transparent visors, and you can see their faces..
or at least *a* face.
-You can pull into the garages in the pitlane

I've got a dual BP6 (both clocked to 550MHz), 384MB ram, and an old STB TNT
1 video card, running Win2k.  I found that switching resolution from 640, to
800, to 1024, only varies the FPS by about 4 or 5.  And no mirrors vs.
mirrors with the goodies off, has roughly 1-2 FPS difference.

The faces seem to be real, that sure looks like Jean Alesi : )

When I turn on the mirrors, my fps stays around 30.
With mirrors off (hit the 'R' key) I get 60 fps!!!

What kind of monstruous machine you must have than!
I can't believe you achieve 60fps with this game, might be wrong but
everybody is complaining about the bad fps number.

I run www.fraps.com
This displays a handly little fps counter in the top-left corner.
In a quick-race with high detail 800x600 and 22 cars, my fps averages around
25.
In a test day with no cars and mirrors ON my fps averages around 35 - 40
On the same test day with mirrors OFF my frame rate averages around 55 fps.
It peaks at 65-70 and drops to 25-30 depending on the number of cars on the
track.
My machine is only a PIII533 with a 32MB GeForce card and 128 megs of
memory.
I've already posted on this NG that I can't understand what the problem is
with everyone's fps.  Mine is fine as you can see!!!
I have noticed that a lot of people with fps problems have a Voodoo board.
The Voodoo is no match for the GeForce in D3D games.

Just to follow up, I turn mipmap on in the .plr file.
Also, I turn off the on-screen map, and set "other car detail" to medium.
I also turn off shadows.
I am running detonator 3.68.

Yes, I have a LWFF wheel.  There is no fps difference between the fps with
FF on or off.
This is because the logitech drivers are very efficient and don't use many
processor cycles.
I also use the UBSB connection.
The Microsoft wheel, by comparison, has very inefficient drivers and kills
the fps.  That's why many people recommend turing the FF off.

I have a 600Mhz Athlon, GeForce DDR, 128MB. My frame rates look good too.
I run it at 1024x768, no mirrors (or at least mirrors with all the mirror
specials turned off), other cars set to "high" detail and everything else
is turned on and set to maximum.
Outside of races, the frame rate is nearly always perfectly silky smooth.
In races, outside of the start, sometimes the 'movie camera' external view
and/or pre-race warmp-up lap or airborne crashes, the frame rate is always
acceptable and is not uncommonly silky smooth looking- at least for the
limited number of tracks I've checked so far. I really haven't had time to
look things over too carefully yet.

Once I tried it with all the mirror stuff turned on and all of the cars set
to max detail and the start of a race was -brutally- choppy (even with the
cars down the medium). Even once the race got going, things were still
***.

On a related note, impressions so far:
The graphics look pretty darn good. The glossy environment effects on the
cars look great, especially when moving in and out of shadows. Some of the
courses I've tried are gorgeous looking- just about as good as Superbike
2000. Some others looked good, but not in that class.

Driving model seems like it might be pretty good overall although I wonder
if the car isn't quite as twitchly delicate as it should be in some cases.
The anti-wheel spin seems to be a fixed aid. F1 cars don't have tracion
control for 2000 do they?

The computer cars seemed to be starting forest fires each time they
negotiated a turn until I upped their skill level to 100%. It seems that as
their skill level is lowered and they become less competent, they still try
to drive just as agressively. Thus they end up locking up nearly non-stop.
I must say, the drivers seemed 'sort' of aggressive during practice. So
much so, in fact, that they would smash people off of the road- a bit much
for just practice. At 100% they drive better but they still have a ***
habit of trying to ram me from behind or piling up at the start. The AI,
from the very brief look I've had so far, would seem to be pretty good
overall -when it is set to 100%- if the drivers weren't made to be so
insanely aggressive.

Quite fun and great to look at.

No.  That is outlawed.
