GP3 on a 'ancient' P2?

Okay, I know this is a dumb question because all new sims seem to
require state of the art computers nowadays but I was just wondering if
my computer has *any* chance of running Grand Prix 3 smoothly at
800*600 resolution. I noticed that the minimum computer is 266 mgz so I
doubt it. But anyway my computer specs :

PII 333 mgz with 128 MB memory
Voodoo 3 3000 AGP video card
Win 95

I must say that I *hate* choppy graphics on my sims so I'm really
wondering if there would be any way to have smooth 30FPS while keeping
decent grapics in the game at 800*600.

Hey, don't make fun of me too much guys I'm poor! ;-)

It should ROCK on your system -- I've witnessed GP3 run on a TRULY
ancient Pentium Pro 200 machine in SOFTWARE mode (no hardware
acceleration), and it actually looked and played very nicely.  People
with midrange machines (in the PII/K6 300+ range and 12 - 16 MB
graphics cards) should be just fine.

But you're never gonna get 30 fps...it only goes up to 25 - same as GP2 etc!

And I believe the standard frame rate for motion pictures is 24 frames
per second, so GP3's 25 fps should be adequate, to say the least. Yes,
more is better, but beyond certain limits, the difference is not even
noticeable.

I've got a PII, 233 Mhz and couldn't wait until friday so i downloaded the
the warez version. When the game starts it automatically sets up the games
for your hardware. It plays perfect!
Can't wait until friday to buy the game!

The most important thing is not getting below the 25 fps; it's keeping
it at a consistent 25 fps, even in traffic or at the start. I still think 25
fps is too low, as I think 24 fps for motion pictures is too low; you may
notice at the cinema when the camera pans things get blurry quickly (but
this might be due to other factors, too). GPL's 36 is much better, or any of
Ratbag's games. :)

<snip>

There was some complicated explanation here of this a while ago, but I
belive that in some circumstances UK films run at 25fps, and in others
at 24fps (possibly one is for TV; the other for cinema - I can't
remember offhand).

EXACTLY! More is better, but the key is stability -- you want a
CONSTANT frame rate most of all, with no surging or lagging.  GPL is
much smoother at 36 fps than it is at 25 fps (I think it's noticeable,
but just barely), so I would have to agree with you on this point as
well.  Ratbag's stuff is pretty much beyond compare, though!

;-)

Aw, cut 'em some slack, Greg -- it's not like Crammond produced an IRL
game or anything!

Exactly. That's why made-for-cinema movies run shorter on TV
(discounting editorial cuts) than they do in the cinema...
