GP3..more 'luke skywalker is in my nose'?

by Dweez » Mon, 13 Sep 1999 04:00:00

Hi,

Seen all the comments on the gfx engine...
As far as i'm concerned it can be ***ugly...as long as
the physics get an overhaul
I'd still play GPL if it were ugly as hell ...because sofar it's the
only thing that really gives me the feeling of driving something that
behaves pretty realistic(VBG)...and the freedom to do with the car
what i want on the circuit

I played GP2...a lot lot...and i loved it( i know it's hard to believe
reading this rant..but i really did)...but there's always been a few
things that pissed me off...and which i couldn't live with
anymore..after the splendure of GPL.
Most important annoyance in GP2 was the damn feeling as if that very
annoying luke skywalker was hiding in my nose using 'the force' to
guide my steering...or like you're on a pre layed out fixed route of
which you can ' hardly 'deviate.
Like on san marino....you got that pits light on by accident...you
drive thru that 2ndlast chicane and you wanna steer to the left for
the final chicane onto the main straight but the damn car ignores the
steering  and gets you driving straight into the pits entrance...or
the barrier if you're not so lucky.
Same with the timing of turning into/outoff a corner..
Drive out of the pits in san marino...go about 50 kmph...drive on
the  right side and then turn the steering all the way left...at a
certain point the car just stops turning with the wheels are still
fully left...
Spin your car 180 degrees...good luck on getting it pointing the right
way again fast without first cursing that damned 'Luke' and screaming
that he should stick the force up a dark place and leave the steering
to me.
And so on..and so on...
For crying out loud..if i decide to go left in a right corner or to
turn in way to early/late  or turn around on the straight....i wanna
be free to do so...that's the point in driving a vehicle..
(oh..just in case...i got *all* driving aids off...duhh)

So for those that have driven the GP3 thing at ECTS..
is that still there?
if this 'canned' behaviour is still there in GP3( i know it's early
days )...then it gets the  finger from me(as if anyone cares)...and
i'll be holding on to my cash(not that anyone cares about that
either..hehe) untill the guys who did GPL will do an indy sim(if that
ever happens...but i can always dream)

Try turning off steering help.  Then, once you get used to that, turn off
opposite lock help.  Much, much, much more fun that way.

Oh, sorry, I should have mentioned steering help is sort of buried in the
controller setup.  It's not one of the ordinary function key helps.  So you
could have it on and not realize it.  Same goes for opposite lock help and
throttle help, IIRC.  It's kinda stupid the way they arrangned that.  You
definitely have steering help on.  You should be able to drive anywhere you
please.  Although come to think of it, maybe you can't turn off steering
help if you use the keyboard.

The steering help isn't in the standard driving aids area, but tied to
controller setup. The symptoms you describe are "Steering Help On".
Without, you get no guiding whatsoever. Its a totally different experience
without it. I too loved GP2, but after racing GPL for ages, I went back to
GP2 and culdn't get e***d by it anymore. I'm sure GP3 will be a blast.
I'll ignore any magazine hype though. Iremeber when GP2 was being previewed
by some PC games mag. They were saying how silky smooth it was looking and
how it would support the 3D Glint chip of the time. Total BS. Games mags
make things up as they go. It's the same as all these ***y Previews on
the Web. Mostly advertising BS.

I can only turn it of when using a wheel, not when using a joystick.

AaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
aaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAArrrrrrrrrrggggggggghhhhhhh

Thanx for the info....VBBGGG
I drove this sim for years with a stick ...getting annoyed by not
getting the 'freedom to go places'...shhhhhhhhheeeeeeeessssssh,
and indeed..one can't turn of the  things you mentioned when using a
stick:(
I bought a cheapo TM wheel for GPL but it went dead after months of
intense 'abuse' and i never tried it in GP2.<big sigh>
Guess i have to speed up saving for that FF wheel....
Sorry for the rant on GP2...i didn't know things would be this
different when you use a wheel instead of jstick.

Well, it's definitely possible to turn steeringhelp off with an
analogue joystick. It's only impossible when you use keyboard or
another digital device. And even then, there's a third-party utility
to do it anyway.

>Hi,

....

Can still be confusing.. Steering help and opposite lock help can only be set up
in the "control method" section. They are not part of the functionkey helps.
Many people confuse the ideal-line help for steering help, for example.

Hi,

<insert half an hour of stronge language...self
mutulation...screaming...>
Unbelievable...i checked it out and fiddled around a bit..and
indeed..it can be done with a joystick...since i couldn't change those
options when i had standard joystick selected  i simply thought those
options weren't used...duuuhhhhh
Now....after two/three years:
a: i find out that i have been drivng with these options turned on
b: i find out i can turn them off

3 years of driving this sim......3 years without getting the full fun
out of it...
It's waaaaaaaaaaay better now....sheeeeeesssshhh...
Man...ain't i a dumb ass...!$#!*%#^*%^&*#*%$*^&*%8!!!
big sigh...

Well, I feel for ya.  That sucks!  You're not neccessarily a dumb ass
either.  As I recall I was playing with opposite lock help turned on for
about 2-3 months before I realised it.  I had been experimenting with it or
something, and turned it on and forgot to turn it back off.  Funny thing was
I thought I was getting faster and more consistent, but it was actually just
the opposite lock help the whole time!  I think the difference was about 2-3
seconds/lap.  To anyone who still plays this game, make sure to recheck your
controller setup frequently!

Just went to San Marino in GP2 - all driving aids off - hit enter to
turn "pit in" light on and had no problem.  Took my normal driving line
through the chicane and back onto the start/finish straight just as I
usually would with the "pit in light off".  I can also veer off to the
right at the first left hander without any difficulty.  Certainly no
sense of being directed by any unknown force.

This was a problem on my old Atari ST computer with the original version
of the game, but not with GP2.
