There's a quote from someone who knew what he was on about...
"Racing has changed a lot since I started. The cars are faster and more
streamlined with more powerful engines and better fuel and oil. Tyres are
wider and the negative lift from aerofoils,. .have put up cornering speeds.
The brakes are better, too, allowing drivers to go deeper at the end of
straights before they have to brake. Drivers have to concentrate harder and
the driving is a much finer balancing act than it was. You could be rougher
with the older types of cars and get away with it. Nowadays the driving has
