F1RS - which CPU do YOU use ?

by Dirk Schroe » Wed, 10 Jun 1998 04:00:00

Earlier on I saw posts of people, who use a 300 MHz PII for F1RS
(AND Voodoo 2).
My question is (and this is probably more of a survey):

What kind of computer power does it need ??

I am very satisfied with my 233 MMX w/ Monster 3D (Voodoo 1);
no frame drop whatsoever. Monaco is very fast, with all options maxed
out.

What would be the entrance level for this game,
and who on earth played GP 2 with ALL options (including sky) on and
got less than 100 % occupancy ??

Same system as you. All GFX on. Full enjoyment factor.

Do you mean low-res (320x200) or high res (640x480)?

I actually re-installed GP2 on my new P2/333 to test out 640x480
and I still needed to turn things off.  I could try 320x200.

Works great on my PPro/200, 256 cache, 1/4 Gig memory,
Pure 3D.

F1RS 1.09 full install with all features turned on,
including replay and full collision.  No driving aids.  I do
have the tire tracks on, but I think of this as good graphics.

Rare, like once in two or three full length races, small
fraction of a second pauses.  These pauses are so short,
they're over before I realize they happen.  No first lap
pauses.  I've done one full season.

   I don't know.

Not me.  But then I never tried it at 10 FPS.  With no sky or
mirrors, it was very smooth at 22 FPS, or so, with PO only
spiking above 100% at a couple of points on most tracks.  Not
enough to notice any problems.  Make that 18FPS at Monaco.

I played GP2 at around 20fps in lo-res without sky texture. At Monaco I
had to turn off level 1 detail.

But at what track? Not Monaco I bet!!(g) I'm running a P266mmx, with
64mb RAM and to run at less than 100% in Monaco I shut off most of the
mirror textures and still had to Alt-D the buildings off. Otherwise I
was running at around 140% going into turn 1.

Now Spain is a different story. All on except sky. Never rose above 90%.

Well guys I am running a HP166 with 32mb of ram.

I have been running the demo and having fun so I ordered it Wednesday from ValueSoft for $ 29.00.

I know the HP166 is slower but I already have 5 pcs and upgrading every 5 months is out of the question.

I really cannot agree with that. What kind of GP2 did you use ?
Probably the very special Geoff C. Version for Voodoo4 ?
(No network support, I guess).
Thy IBM/Cyrix P166+ why the reason for dumping my old
Pentium 133 18 months ago. It was really an improvement when
overclocked, yet again not at all playable at full detail level, even
though I knew I could not expect that.
There are far too few boxes in graphics setup that can actually be
checked so that the game will run fluently (Monaco is out of the
question).
But what do I tell you, you probably all know from your own
experiences...

That was a LONG time ago. But now I begin wondering why a 233 MMX
(even overclocked) is not sufficient for such a rather old game like
GP2 ! Geoff did a superior job with GP2, but it was lacking speed AND
of course network play (support as a whole was never intended.
Sell and forget). Ubisoft on the other hand took their chance and gave
us what we wanted. I am very happy with it (rip, GP2)

Now I switched over to F1RS and the frame rates are not a question
anymore. (BTW, is there a way to display them ?)

Well, on my P200 it runs with every detail on, including sky, in hi-res
mode, and the PO is 90-120% at every track except Monaco. Surprising, but it
may have something to do with the S3 speed-up utility I am running.

To compare cpu occupances you not only have to look at which track, but
also which veiw you are using?

I think it was Pieters website? that had a comparison screen showing cpu
occupances on different pc's. And he had a standard way of asking people
to compare set-ups.

I cannot remember it *exactly*, but you basically had to start GP2, set
all the grahics option to "on" (in svga *NOT* vga) and set the frame
rate to a certain rate (25fps?) and then go to a quick race at Monaco (I
think you had to place your car at around 10th on the grid?) you then
pressed the "o" key and noted the cpu occupancy from various views
before the race started. eg:- in-car, behind car, in front of car, and
tv view. It's amazing how different views affect cpu occupancy? as well
as different tracks and different pc set-ups.

So to compare cpu occupances in GP2, you need to state your pc set-up,
the estimated frame rate, the graphics options (sky, mirror details,
etc) which are turned on, the mode that gp2 is set to drive in (quick
race, etc) the track used, and the view used.

Yeah, right! Which track? which mode? (eg:- quick race) where *exactly*
is it under 100% (eg:- at the start?) and where *exactly* is it over
100% (eg:- on a bare straight with no other cars in view?) which
estimated fps? and which view?

I'll tell you the secret: your framerate is 15-16fps instead of the 25 mentioned
in the other posts.

Don't deny it, because it would be impossible!  :-)
