Crap: GP3 && MSFF using all CPU (and beyond)

by TH » Sun, 30 Jul 2000 04:00:00

Hi,

As subj. says.....enabling FF in GP3, and the OCC climbes to 250%-300%
!!!!!!!!!!

Anyone else? Solution?

Specs:
MSFF attached to SB-Live
P2-400 w. TNT-1

Runs about 90% OCC with no FF........! No probs. in OF1R or other games....

Looks more and more like Microprose should have waited a couple of months
with this game....looks great and I like it....but all the talk about V2
cards not working....And the sound issues...too big mistakes for a released
version with no demo.

It must be that wheel, FF has no speed impact with my Logitech.

Hello,

Well, that disc. can go on forever.....Since the Wheel works perfectly with
all my other Sims. I know from other threads, that this OCC problem isnt for
all with MSFF.

Is it the game? Or the wheel? I dont know...

All I know is that I've paid big $ for a new game-....I had to yank out my
V2 card, invest quickly in a TNT just to get satisfied framerates....And of
course this FF problem which means that I dont even bother to start up the
game.....Its dissapointing that the software makers is using me as a
beta-tester!!!

Crap. I think i'll have another round of solitaire...

Yes, I had exactly the same problem when I bought GP3 yesterday. The
solution is to install DirectX7a (note the 'a'). You can download this
at Microsoft's web site. I was previously running DirectX7. The
little 'a' fixed the problem wonderfully. Processor occupancy is now
the same with or without FF. I also get the problem of the wheel
pulling to the left all the time, but I have just seen a solution to
that (untick the "map X to Z forces" [not sure if letters are correct]
in the game controller control panel applet). I'll try that when I get
home later.

My MSFF (gameport) has no framerate impact with GP3, do you have the USB
version ?

Wheel. The MSFF used 1.5million CPU cycles per FF event
while the LWFF used 50K. Huge difference.

You didn't read any of the reports here before you bought? The FF
implementation has been spotty at best.

When GPL was patched to include force-feedback all the available wheels were
tested by someone and it was found that the MSFF used the most CPU cycles
where as the LWFF used the least. All other wheels were in between but
closer to the LWFF side. The MSFF was a the CPU hog of the bunch. Now that
the processors have gotten faster over the last year, most people probably
don't see the hit as easily.

OCC from 80% up to 250% because of the cpu cycles? Not realistic.
Besides....I can play OF1R, NFS, etc without problems.

Yes I did.....didnt think it was unplayable though.....opinions differ, that
goes for all gameplay.....but theres a long way from messy gameplay to
actual errors in implementation.

Well, that did SOMETHING :)

Now it doesnt degrade OCC when FF is enabled.....however, now I dont have
any FF whatsoever :)

As soon as the game Exits....the force returns....strange ?
