MSFF & CPU Performance

by Slipper » Thu, 20 Jan 2000 04:00:00

I recently went out and bought a MSFF, and have since discovered  cpu
performance is feeling the pinch. (many postings refer to MSFF as being a
CPU hog, but it seemed to be more comfortable for me, especially the
pedals).

GPL offers help in the readme to improve performance for MSFF users but the
N3 readme only appears to have the following:

"FORCE FEEDBACK VARIABLES

Users with force feedback devices can tune the forces by adding the
following two variables to their N3.INI:

FORCE_SCALE_PERCENT n
FORCE_DAMPING_PERCENT n

Both can be set to the range of 0-200 and will scale the existing parameters
accordingly.  Force Scale is used to determine how strong a force is, and
can be used to try to adjust the amount of force the game provides.  Force
Damping is a factor in determining how much resistance the wheel provides to
turning.  It would primarily be used to decrease the tendency of a wheel to
oscillate under certain conditions."

Does anyone adjust these figs and get a cpu performance improvement, or any
other suggestions?

system spec
AMD K6/200
Intel740 8mb AGP 2d card
Creative 8mb voodoo 2
Creative Sound blaster AWE 32 (ISA card)

On another issue, has anyone tried to create additional pressure in the
pedals by placing something underneath? Someone suggested a cut squash ball,
which does help but a little too hard when you want to apply max braking
force.

regards

from the looks of your system you should be happy that you can drive those
programs,
you need an updated soundcard, you need an accelerated game port , to get
your controller speed up,
and that 200 is hurting running N3

Just out of interest, just how much difference does the sound card make?

My machine (Celeron 466, STB TNT card) runs much, much better than when it
had ye Olde Pentium II 266 in, but the GPL frame rate (or more accurately
the number of AI cars I can have running before the frame rate drops to an
unacceptable figure during starts) isn't as good as other people with
similiar processor/video setups get.

Would replacing my old ISA bus AWE64 with something like a generic "Vortex"
PCI bus card make a real difference?

last year i had p200 , v2 , 96meg, sb32, learned about the accelerated game
port in monster sound , and decided i needed it, and WOW , it gave me 5-10
frames in all games, because of the sound acceleration, and the game port ,
the old SB stuff can't do multiple audio streams in "hardware" it mixes in
software (CPU usage) where Vortex releives cpu of game port and sound
duties, which as you know is the whole deal ,
so to answer you, A big Difference ,

What soundcard or gamecard are you talking about?
That sounds interesting cause I have lots of problems with FF
and FPS together with the MS FF wheel (see my other posting in ras)

Thanks

Lutz
