IndyCar Racing II question (CPU performance

I know that most of you have Pentiums, but I am still wallowing in the
glory days of the 486DX2-66 with 8 megs of RAM and I was wondering if anyone
out there had a computer with similar (on a VERY basic level) configuration
and was running IndyCar Racing II, and if you did, could you tell me about
the game performance (or maybe lack there of).  I am refering to graphic
frame rate, computer locking up, etc.  Thanks!

I have a 486DX2, 16Megs Ram, 1Mbyte Diamond Stealth VLB video card and the
game runs fine in SVGA mode when I turn ALL details off (except skid
marks). I havn't checked to see what fram rate I get, but I'm sure it
isn't much above 12 or 13.

Basically, it sucks. I have a 486DX2-66 with 8 MB, and a ATI Mach32
graphics card on an EISA bus. I have Win95 installed, but am currently
booting from floppy. At 15 fps I get choppy graphics with everything
turned off except skid marks against 15 opponents. Sigh.

I would like to upgrade my graphics card to a 64 bit one, but finding
a decent one for ISa is difficult. I'm not sure if more memory would
help, other than increasing the length of replays. Anyone?

Looks like we'll have to bite the bullet and buy Pentiums. The problem
is, which one? What is the most important factor, speed, memory, or
graphics card?

Speaking of graphics cards, will the newer 3D cards outperform the
older 64/128 2D cards such as a Diamond Stealth 64, Matrox Millenium,
or a Number 9? If cost was no object, what is the best card going?

ICR2 runs great in VGA, max detail on my 486/DX266 16MB ram, ET4000/w32p 1MB
video card. SVGA? No way :-) I found the framerate of ICR2 to be better at max
detail than ICR1. ICR2 has greater VGA graphics than ICR1. Another DX2/66 owner
(and friend) told me he noticed ICR2 had worse framerate than ICR1. I guess it
is a toss up :-)

You have to install the univbe driver, which requires a VESA driver
I believe. Check in the mach32 directory or wherever your cards drivers
are installed and there should be a vvesa.exe driver. (.com ?) Run this
and then try installing the univbe driver. You then run high rez with
indycar -h.

Problem is, it is dog slow. Time to buy a Pentium.

I just loaded the demo and with a little fiddling, got it running fine,
on a 486DX 66mhz 8meg ram with Win95.  I set up all details to ON and
the frame rate and performance isn't bad at all.  The only problem is
that it dosn't recognize my ATI32 video card, I get normal rez only.

It runs acceptably on my 486-66 with 16 meg in VGA.  I have the other
car textures switched on and everything else to auto.  You don't get
much background detail, but acceptable game play and 18 fps.

Try using the -f setting. It REALLY helps if you don't mind FM engine
sounds (which aren't too bad).

I have a DX2/50, and if I'm the only car on the track, the frame rate is
OK.  As soon as I add some opponents, forget it!  It is so choppy that
it's undrivable.  The original Indycar runs fine, the new one uses lots
more CPU, even with all detail off except skids and the turn distance
markers.  (If I turn those off, faster frame rate won't help me stay on
the road!)

I recently borrowed a DX-66 and had it in my computer when the demo
came out.  It ran in VGA great with 26 opponents.  (VLB video 1meg on
board, 12 megs of RAM).  SVGA was a little too much to handle.
I put my new DX120 on and it SCREAMS in SVGA.  I can run full
opponents and just the road texture and grass (sometimes) goes off.
HEY for SVGA I can deal with some missing grass texture.
This game is AWESOME..
Much harder than ICR1, btw.

You should be able to run the game with no problems.  NASCAR, ICR and ICR2 all
enable you to tone down some of the detail settings for slower machines.  You
might have to reduce some of the track detail or sound detail options, but it
will still be an awesome game to play on even a 486dx2-66...
