FINALLY! 1:29 at Monza!

by Schlom » Tue, 14 Dec 1999 04:00:00

I finally after 14 months cracked 1:29.  I just (at 4AM) ran a 1:29.64.  Oddly
enough the lap felt slow and looked even worse in replay but it was fast enough
I guess.  It might have actually been a 1:28 but i lost an eternity in Lesmo2.
The saving grace for that turn was I managed a good exit speed.  But in the
turn itself i was all kinds of sideways and my mid-corner speed was only 73MPH.
But ill take the 1:29 anyway i can get it.  Talk about an early Christmas
present for myself <g>  I knocked OVER A SECOND off my previous PB of 1:30.71
in only one night.  The elation I experianced literally made me do a little
victory jig <G>

Nice one mate,

I too did the old 'victory jig' (if such a thing exists) when I cracked it.
You've set another ball rolling though by beating me by 0.01s. Grrr. Back to
the practise laps (again).

So, so nearly cracked the 1:28s but threw it at the scenery entering the
Parabolica. SpyGirl shows my hot lap way ahead of the previous PB. No use if
you *** the barriers though!

Everyone is so right about exit speeds though, makes an unbelievable
difference to the overall lap time.

Yup. I finally broke the 1:30 barrier myself the other day -
and I know I can do better. All I have to do is finally NAIL
SOLID the Parabolica. I HATE that turn. I tail brake on the edge
the entire trip en, only to apex too early and have to nurse the
exit speed up to the place I want. I know just a hair later apex
would let me exit smoother and faster. Lesmos is also a ***,
but I ususally do well there.

That's where 95% of your lap time success comes.  Would you rather be 10 mph
slow for a hundred yards in the middle of the turn, or 10 mph slow for the
whole length of the straight?  Nice going, I'm jealous.

Congratulations!

I hope I'll get there soon too! I drove a 1:30.26 today with Dough Arnao's
Lotus setup I went almost 1 sec. faster than I did with Alison Hine's setup
on my third lap out! I hope I'll be able to perform a sub 1:30 this week. I

faster through that lefthander before Parabolica (290km/h) and braking later
for Parabolica.

Or to be short: you win time mostly by taking every corner faster :)

Which is STILL easier said than done...  Everytime I try to brake later, I'm
off the track...
