New to GPL, need help

Hi,

I just got GPL this last month and am having a great time practising at
Silverstone. I've downloaded all the setups, updates, AI editor, etc and
have gotten down to 1:30 lap times.

The problem comes when I started practicing races, from the back of a
nine car field. All of a sudden, my "silky" smooth motion gets "choppy".

I have a PII 450, 256 Mb RAM, 7200 RPM HD, 16 MB Voodoo 2, TM T-2.

When I pull on the inside to pass Amon's Ferrari, one second I'm (over
braking) headed for his right front tire and the VERY next instant, I'm
past him and he's in my mirror.

All the while, my frame rate is 36 fps.

Is this "chopiness" normal ??? I know I have enough computer, but it
seems that when there's cars CLOSE in front, the action gets "wierd".

If I exeprience this alone, what is the action like "on-line" ???

Can anyone tell me what I'm experiencing ???

I love this game, AND, this newsgroup, and would appreciate any
help/comments.

Thanks to all,

Emery Emond

Yes, it's normal. Even your mighty machine is taxed to the limit by GPL, no
matter what the frame counter says. On-line it wil be even worse.

Best thing to do is to cut back on the graphics (you don't really need those
driver's arms, do you?), go back in resolution, set objects to 'many', only
cars in mirrors, cut sounds to 4, set detail slider only halfway etc. Then
you'll be fine with your machine, both on and off-line.

The only graphics I really NEED in GPL are the racing line and the wall
textures, sometimes the track texture and crowds too, depending on the
track. For on-line racing I switch everything else off or at minimum,
because high frame rates are more important than eye candy. And that's with
a PII 300.

Good luck,
Leo
