GPL rules but I need a new system....

by ra300 » Tue, 06 Mar 2001 11:53:07

I am very confused as to what type of video card to get.  I run a 3DFX
Voodoo 3-2000 AGP card currently.  I bought this card July of 1999
and have gotten a lot of great time out of it.  Do I upgrade it as
well?

So how should I  replace it?  Stick with Voodoo?  Go to GeForce2?
ATI Radeon?

I WANT COMPLETE GPL COMPLIANCE!!! :))  I also would like to add
video-out.

The system I am pricing out is as follows:
CPU - Athlon TB 1133
Motherboard - Abit KT7A
Memory - 256 MB
Video Card - 32MB Asus AGP-V7100/T GeForce2 MX Pure
Harddrive - 30.7GB Fujitsu MPG3307AT
Sound Card - Sound Blaster Live! Value (OEM)
Case - Mid-tower
DVD-ROM - Pioneer DVD 16X drive (40X CD-ROM) (OEM)
CD-ROM - HP CD Writer
Network - PCI Realtek 8139.
TV Card - ATI TV Wonder VE
Nothing else.

I am going from a Celeron 466 to this system--mostly for the increase
bus speed, memory, etc.  Please critique my system!!! Thanks.

In a system like that, your're crazy to go with an MX. You halve your video
power to save $100.......

I'd also, since it's do cheap right now I'd add another 256MB of RAM. That
you won't regret.

Even those it's as expensive as hell, I'd say wait a month and put a GF 3 in
it.

I think that a GF3 might be too expensive for a lot of people.  When
is this card coming out?

One other question:  will I notice a big difference between an AGP
Voodoo 3 2000 video card and the GeForce 2?  I like the 3DFX video
very much and I am worried that the quality of the graphics won't be
there.

Don't know if it matters to you or not, but Abit is no longer on AMD's
recommended list...

Gee - does that mean my ABIT KT7-RAID which I've been running since last
October no longer works??  <g>

In a few months.
At the VERY least, I'd go with a Geforce 2 Ultra.

I've seen some nice screenshots of Voodoo5 FSAA in GPL.  Can a
GeForce2 handle it?  I suspect that's the only way the GeForce2 will
look better than the Voodoo3 with such an old game.

Your CPU is quite important here, especially for GPL you need a fast
processor if you have a GFII card.Think PIII700 or more.
I could run GPL reasonably well on my PIII500 GFII but I had to switch
down to 800x600 and had to turn some mirror details down.

Don't go more than 512MB, as Win98/ME actually run slower with 512 and
higher.

Mistake... with a CPU that fast, you're crippling your system with an MX
card.  Get a GTS2 or even a GTS2 Ultra.  The CPU and the video card are THE
most important parts of any *** rig.  Cut corners elsewhere if you need
to.

Everything else looks solid.

Yea Really, Don't take a look at AMD's recommendation list cause some of the
boards listed are just crap.  (There are worse words out there)  Definitely
Abit or Asus board you should go with, no other.  KT7 is a great board,
running KT7-RAID No problems.

At the very least, I would not waste your money on a GeForce 2 ULTRA, but
instead go with either a GeFore 2 GTS 64Meg or little less performance much
money saved for an ATI Radeon 64Meg.  GF3, its already out in Japan, should
be out in the States mid March

If he waits till the Geforce 3 comes out, the Ultra will come down even more
in price.
I would say AVOID the Radeon, as ATI has a well-deserved reputation for
lousy drivers.

wrote wonderful things about sparkplugs:

Actually WIN98SE only utilizes about 256 (actually a touch lower,) so
anything over that is overkill.  W2K, however, can definitely handle
all that memory.

My new Tbird1.2 on an abit kt7a raid is giving me fits. I keep losing
my ability to access the bios (purple line across bottom of screen).
It's driving me crazy.
