I'd say a good car simulator would be a German Touring Car game!
It would be so cool, you can choose to drive M3's , Mercedes, Audi's,
and be able to supe it up anyway you like!

Any thoughts?

I LIKE IT! I'd be able to make Klaus Ludwik (sp?) eat the concrete wall
in his Opel Calibra ;-) And I'd wish they would put Helsinki to their
track list!

But seriously, imagine having a 4WD 400+ bhp Mercedes in your disposal :-)

are you sure? Sounds pretty dull to me - even the 600hp NASCAR
cars are suggish and boring compared to Indycar or Formula
One. I am really looking forward to F1GP 2.0, and not much
else from papyrus. I'm sick of all the buggy releases and the
lack of response after the stuff is out.

I am still waiting to see their track bug fixes on their
official ftp site...

Microprose is just a much more solid company and I expect a
great product with FAST cars :-)

To each his/her own, of course.  I think the response time from Papyrus
may depend on the means one uses to contact them.  For example, the
e-mail addresses at The World, AOL, and Prodigy (and wherever else they
are) are handled all by one person, Jane Sieczowicz (sp? Dang, Jane, get
a nickname! :-) ) and she has to deal with the ENTIRE load of Internet
complaints/bug reports/etc.

Whereas the tech support at Papyrus by PHONE is incredible.  I called in
a bug about the screen drivers with my system and they called back with a
patch in less than two days, and what's more they've been checking back
with me by phone every so often to make sure everything's working.

Solid, huh?  They're a much BIGGER company, that's true.  However, their
products are as buggy as the next corporate giant.  Remember, in the
software industry, quality is job 1.1.  I'm sure people could cite
Microprose's F1GP as a relatively bug-free product, and I could cite
Papyrus' Indy 500 in the same vein.  However, the bigger the beast, the
more there is to tweak.  Don't look for F1GP2 to be solid right off the
line, whenever it comes out.

I think Papyrus is doing pretty darn good for a small company with their
products.  Yes, they are buggy and need tweaking -- I'm not being an
apologist for that, and it's from opting to release a package with known
bugs in order to meet a distribution deadline.  Could be worse, though --
could be like Microprose or Microsoft, who delay their releases
interminably until they're delayed a year or so, and then STILL come out
with bugs.  *shrug*

Nobody's perfect, I suppose. ;-)

That would be awesome!!! Playing around with aerodynamics, traction control
thresholds, ABS thresholds, active suspension, 4WD torque splits in addition
to all the regular stuff. I reckon it would be grouse trying to knock Klaus
Ludwig out of the race, and burst a Calibra into flames at Avus after being
hit up the rear by another car :-) John Winter eat your heart out!!!

to heck with those furin tracks, I would rather see a Trans Am or Can Am
game, maybe a Trans Am game from its early glory years, race against
Donahue, Folmer, Gurney and the greats that made racing great.

How about this one?  Rally racing.  I mean real rally racing - Paris to
Dakar, Baja 1000, that crazy one in Australia - You could pick between my
different types of cranked-up cars or trucks.  You would power slide
around narrow turns with a steep cliff to one side, and a bunch of natives
on the other side.  Scenery would be magnificant.  You would have limited
repair equipment with only a couple of spares to spare.

 I don't know. Just a thought.

It could be cool, way cool. The biggest challenge in road rallies, though, was
finding the right road, and hitting check points on-time, not too early, not
too late. If you're talking about plain road racing, and I guess you are,
heck, that should be a breeze to do. For someone like Papyrus, that is, who
already has a good model to just slap on top of one very long stretch of road.
All they would need is someone crazy and bored enough to detail the thousands
of miles in the road. CD distribution is ideal for this. It'd be neat to feed
it topo models from USGS, but I guess that's stretching it a little...

What about a drag racing game guys? It would be great to have a choice
between racing either in funny cars or top fuel dragsters, and playing
around with clutch release points, burnouts, parachutes, incendiary engines,
and watching the replays right after you've nailed the railing right at the
end of the strip at about 150MPH!! :-)
The .DAT files for each of the tracks should also be relatively small, since
you've only got a long straight, meaning that Papyrus should be able to
include all of the tracks in the NHRA series in the one game, as opposed to
releasing tracks in increments ala Indycar and NASCAR.

Just my 2 bits,

Cameron..

I love DTM (though actually getting it on TV in Northam ....) I build
plastic models and Tamiya has a lovely 1994 C-Class Merc in 1/24 scale
ummmm. I guess the prog would be easy coz DTM handle much as NASCARS
though probably a little nimbler plus they have traction control and ABS
etc. All road courses (the best but hard to learn)as for papyrus doing
one na ah - no market in Northam - how many Americans have even heard of
Touring cars very few . . . . Papyrus is in buisness and they have to sell
Like Rally sim with desert, artic, Monaco etc courses would be brill -
again no sell in America - (big money, big prizes ...)
Me thinks a Lemans, IMSA (ex), World Sports Car, or something GT cars
would be more likely - and if they do a dragster sim I will personal
send a letter bomb (THAT WAS A JOKE OK OK MR FBI) to them , of course
a very intsy wintsy small one

Gee I don't know about a LeMans racing game, cause would you really want
to race for 24hrs???

Good idea the last drag racing sim. I can recall was "Shirley
Muldowney's Top Fuel Challange" from my old Commodore 64 days.
Graphics where good "for thier time" and had plenty of REAL options and
set-up. Pretty odd that there isn't one around though, guess the
Software guys need to do some market research huh?

Oh well sooner or later :)

want >to race for 24hrs???

On you're own it would be a bit boring, but imagine it as a multi-user
game over modems, you could drive as a team taking stints (or on you're
own if you really want) could be quite an interesting event.

I hope the team mates are paying the phone bills;-)

More seriously, if long races are in the list, it could include several
of them.  Le Mans, Daytona, Spa, etc.  Naturally this requires different
car designs.  "24 hour racing"?

Some comments on other subjects mentioned in this thread:
* Drag Racing: Setup should be very complicated, and different track
conditions modeled (changes in weather between starts, increased
grip as more *** is laid on track surface etc).  I don't
want to face a situation where I've found the ultimate setup for
  all races.
* DTM or other road/street course stock car racing (Trans Am).  I sure
would like to see Grand Prix Center of Helsinki in racing sim, but I
suppose we would need a German game company to make DTM sim.  I'm not
that e***d about Trans Ams.  Watkins Glen in Nascar is difficult
  enough...
* Sprint car racing.  I only have a faint idea what this is about.  I
think these are small cars with powerful engines on short dirt ovals?
If this is the case, sounds fun.

Rally cross might be another good simulator.  Short races, lots of
starts on short (mostly) dirt road courses.

Anyway, the next Papyrus release I'd like to see is track pack(s) for
Nascar Racing.  I'm not very interested about Indy or Daytona (but I'll
buy them if they are released), mostly I'm waiting for the other
unreleased tracks.

Pasi.

I heard a *rumour* that Papyrus' next project is in fact  a rally game.  I
don't know to what extent it will cover, but I was also told that it will use
the same basic engine (pardon the pun) as IndyCar and NASCAR, but with some
mods to cater for rally-bred cars handling etc.  Can't wait - should be hella
cool !!!! ;->

Cheers !

Simon.
