F1RS: Braking/Throttle, Hmmm!

Hello,

Well, after a few more hours of F1RS (ver 1.07), A.B.S. and Anti-Spin
aids were turned off. This is what I see, using a Ch-Flightsick.

With:  A.B.S. "off"

It took a bit, but finally noticed I was locking-up the brakes quite
a bit. A nice touch, the front tires actually (visually) stop turning
when the fronts are locked up!

But there is no "audio" sound/noise, etc., letting me know that my
tires are locking up. If I could actually hear the tires beginning to
lock-up, it'd be much easier to stop/control/handle the car properly.

Yup, the tires DO locks up visually, and there is smoke (can see it
in the mirrors), but there is simply no time to look in the mirror (or
watch the tires) anticipating a tire lockup. Maybe practice will help
this problem?

(I think GP2 found the best solution, to know what condition tires
are in; the screeching sounds of the tire(s). When tires are entering
a lockup (or spin) situation, or very "stressed" in a turn,
tire-noises occur).
***

 With:  Anti-Spin  "Off"

Unless I missed something in the manual or settings, Anti-Spin "off"
is simply absurd!! <g>. I'm using a CH-Flightstick (Stick forward) for
throttle.

With "Acceleration" sensitivity set to 0, or 100, no matter, the car
is basically "FLOORED" when applying amount of throttle.

I put a car to a complete stop, was in 1st gear, and slowly applied
thottle. At the very tip-top of the joystick handle, there is
appoximately 1/8" of travel, between idle, and full-throttle.

Then I tried 2nd gear, and 3rd gear, and had absolutely no control of
the throttle, or the car.

Result; rear tires are "frying" when Anti-Spin setting is "off". The
car is out of control when applying thottle.

F1RS seems to be a neat sim, hope I'm mearly missing some obvious
"settings gone heywire".

I don't want to run this sim with any driving-aids. But steering
control is a bit twitchy/loose, braking/tire-stress is very hard to
detect as it occurs, and the throttle control is unbelievably
sensitive.

Someone -please- tell me my settings are all messed up.

They are - you need to adjust the sensitivity of the joystick. With my
steering wheel, I find that 95% steering, 80% brake and acceleration
sensitivity provide the most realistic settings. Low or high sensitivity for
the acceleration will produce the exact problems that you mentioned.

you may also want to raise the gears throught
someone sent me a racing setup for spa 1:47 I think and the 1st gear was
way up there, about 33 if I remember correctly

Look at your sound settings and make sure the 'other sounds' (err, not
speech and not engine) is set to and audible level. I turned this off at
some point to get rid of the annoying garage sounds and then wondered
why there was no tyre noises.

Yes, practice.

Sorry, apart from to suggest you buy a set of pedals. I've never found
using a stick for steering and throttle/brakes to be to much like hard
work. before I invested in my pedals I would use the keyboard for pedals
rather than my trusty old flightstick.

 Re: Sensitive throttle,

Yeah, finally started playing with gears, ride-height, gears, etc.,
it's pretty much the same stuff as GP2.

Dang trottle is still quite sensitive though, even with maxxed-out
throttle sensitivity.

In nuetral, I checked the travel of the joystick, and max-throttle is
achived when the stick is pushed about 2/3rds forward. If only that
extra 33% of stick was being used. Dang I bet this is a W95 problem
(dx5!..<g>).

Oh well, it's time to write Ubisoft, or think about some foot-pedals
(if they help any).

Hehehe, that's the -first- thing i turned off after installing F1RS.
Geez now I got noisy tires...<g>. Thanks.

Btw, I found a simple patch (nomnusnd.zip), it's called "No Sound In
Menus Patch". Thank goodness!

 ( WAPP-WAPP-WAPP-WAPP!!! ).

I think GP2 worked wonderfully this way, especially with the 1-button
shift-up/down config button #1, (also not found on any other racing
sim).

Oh well, maybe time for a set of pedals. Would pedals give any more
control over throttle, verses a joystick? I know the benefits of
pedals, but wonder if throttle/brake sensitivity would provide more
"throttle play", vs. a joystick?

I found GP2 much the same as F1RS in this respect. I just find that with
having to move my arm forward and back all the time I quickly get oxygen
starvation in my lower arm. With just the steering on the stick, I can
achieve some degree of comfort over race distances.

Well for a start you get the twice the resolution (two pot's feeding the
sim where before there was only one). I shelled out for the CH pro
pedals (about 70 ukp) and they have been worth every penny - but then I
get a lot of use out of them with flight sims too).
