GPL: Difference between Voodoo1 & Voodoo2 ?

by Simo » Thu, 14 Jan 1999 04:00:00

Hi,

I have had GPL for a while now - still a learner though...

I am running GPL on a Pentium2 - 333 mhz machine with a 3dfx Voodoo1 card in
it. I am thinking about upgrading to a Voodoo2 card - how big a difference
will I see ? I realize the graphics will be the same, but will there be an
increase in FPS ?

Currently I am running 640*400 and get app. 28 fps during a race with 19
opponents.

Any help appreciated

Simon

P.S. How about MGPRS2 ? Will I be able to run that game in 800*600 with a
Voodoo2 ?

Well, from what I heard a P1 233 can max out a V1 so you should see a
noticable improvement ( I upgraded my old P200MMX from V1 to V2 and noticed
a maked increase in FPS.

My brother-in law is using a V1 in a 300a and compared to another friends
300a that is using a 16meg Banshee its a performance pig !! :-)  ( they are
the same apart from the 3DFX cards )

regards, Paul

Thats good news for me - I've got a 200MMX on 32 RAM and a voodoo1,
getting a voodoo2 today, ahead of a planned CPU upgrade - just waiting
for the K6-2 price cuts to come into force

Then you'll have the same as me! It runs fine, but you still wont find it

probably not - but i have enough problems getting past a couple of cars
(admittedly partly due to a sudden drop in FPS) let alone a whole grid!
I've mainly got the voodoo2 now to see what improvements in lap times i
can get in hotlap mode when the FPS is boosted, racing will come with
the CPU upgrade, hell i haven't even been round all the tracks yet!

just WHY do they say the Glen is an easy track to learn!!?? is it HELL!

Hi Simon,

Get the Voodoo2.  You will be able to run 800x600 without any loss in fps.
You can see farther down the track at 800x600 and there are not any
slow downs in the Monaco tunnel.  My card is a M3D2 12mb and I love it :)

I was getting 36fps with my voodoo1, you may want to put the opponents
to 12-15.  Detail at ~10% and mirrors to car & track.

The P2/333 is not powerful enough to have all the details and still run 36fps
with 19 opponents.

On a PII 300, 64MB, and 8MB voodoo2 - 19 opponents, all graphics on except
for mirrors (cars & track, only textures on cars), detail bias set about
25%, 800x600, I got:

32-36 FPS in single line racing

I think you'll see a pretty big increase going to a Voodoo2.  (BTW, I got
about a 10% increase by adding a Diamond Monster Sound M80 and using it's
gameport as well - it has pretty poor sound, but helped my FPS.  If you
don't already have one, a PCI sound card might also help performance, but
note that some help FPS more than others).

I also run MGPRS2 at 800x600 (when I'm not playing GPL, which is not often
;)

Or 1024x768 - this makes a big difference, IMO,

GPL: Difference between Voodoo1 & Voodoo2 ?

by Mike Buckle » Fri, 15 Jan 1999 04:00:00

Installed the voodoo2 last night, mixed fortunes!
I had to download the latest drivers from europe.3dfx.com before the
'black track' problem was fixed. Frame rate has gone up dramatically in
training mode - i was getting generally around 22-25 fps at silverstone
with detail set to about 50% and texture on everything but mirrors, this
now goes up to 35-36 on most parts of the track - dropping to 28-30 on
others. One problem i do have is that for the first 3 laps or so the
game will maybe once a lap just freeze and then jump to where it should
be! After a reboot i'm also getting 2 GPF's when i first click on GPL,
then when i;ve closed them and i reclick on it it runs fine, this may be
the voodoo2 or the MS FF which i installed at the same time - anyone
else had this?

I've yet to try it in any races - the MS FF is taking some getting used
to after the TM Sprint!

Hi Paul,

I tried 1024x768 again -- I remembered sub 36fps frame rates.

Well I can do 1024 with my P2/333 if I turn trackside objects to 'few' as well as
change most other speed/beauty settings.

Your right, 1024 is awesome.  Everything is really clear.  Even non-bevelled tires
are round as -- well tires :)

Too bad I need more juice to run in the detail I'm used to in 800x600.

Jason.

I guess because it's very short, but I especially hate the last three
corners (the ~3rd (or 4th) gear right, then left, then the 90 corner
to the right). It's quite easy to miss the right point to begin
braking for the first corner, and the 90 (or is it more?) corner is
just awful.

Learning the track and going fast are two different things ;)

Now learning the Nurburgring is tough.  Never mind going fast!

With a 333 you can expect 1024x768 at 36fps and dual Voodoo2. I've seen it!
Maybe you don't have enough memory?
