Hey all.  Getting ready to buy a new (value-level) system.
Probably a Duron 750 OCed just a bit with 256M of RAM.

Anyway.  I"m trying to decide on a video card.  One option is
waiting for the Kyro2, which should ship for somewhere around $150.

This would be about the highest I'd go, and I'd really like to be
around $100.

Cards at this level would be 32meg Radions, Geforce2 MXs, and the
Voodoo2 5500.

The 5500 looks tempting at the $100 price point.  Besides driver
support now being basically legacy, is there any other reason, for
purposes of performance in GPL, Nascar4 and GP3, to go with one of the
others?

For GPL, N4 and GP3 the V5 5500 would be swell.  BUT if you even THINK
you'llllll be trying WSC, then I think the V5 will really be a
drawback..(gnashing of teeth since thats what I have...)
Driver support for the current generation of game is just fine...probably
until the fancy programmed graphics and vertex shading sims come out the V5
will be a-o-k.
I guess you'll face the same limitation with ANY of the cards you
listed...ok for now..but how much longer?

Not bad, but the Geforce 2 Pro is on sale somewhere at $150, only
about $10 or so more.  But this is still a good $40 more than a v5 5500.
Is the GPL and N4 and GP3 performance better with a Geforce2 Pro?  $50
better?

Hmmm.  Would the MX or Radeon beat out the V5 5500 in those racing
games?  As for WSC...not sure.  I suspect I'll want to spend time with SCGT
first--I've got quite a few games that I'd want to put back in now that I
have something to handle them, like GPL.

That is what I am figuring.  Know anything about the 2d quality of
the V5 5500?  How about linux driver support?

Realistically?  With my habits?  Quite a while.  I'm not really one
for the newest and greatest.  But even so, with the various possible paths
available for future video technology, I'm sorta thinking that going for
something at a value-price range, say $100, is a whole lot more sensible than
paying big bucks for something that, quite honestly, will be quickly
obsolete.  And I'm not big on the shooters, so...

XFree86 4.03 supports your V5, including acceleration, with the tdfx
driver.  What's your distro of choice?  I triple-boot Win98SE,
Linux-Mandrake 8.0 & FreeBSD 4.3.

Haven't set any up yet, at least not on my own machines--was planning
on playing around a bit this summer.  Probably Mandrake, though I haven't yet
decided.  May play around with Redhat, Corel, FreeBSD.
