F1RS and Riva TNT

F1RS and Riva TNT

by Jay » Thu, 14 Jan 1999 04:00:00

Hi Sorry if this is a repost.....

I just installed a STB Velocity 4400 (Riva TNT, AGP) card in my PII 266
(Micronics 440LX MB, and 64 meg of SDRAM) and when I went to fire up F1RS,
which I had already been on my machine, I got an error that it could not run
this version of the game!

I've also experienced problems with very poor frame rates with GPL (like
less than one!) even though I have the OpenGL patch in place, (I know it's
working or the helmet color would be white, like in software mode, rather
than gold as I selected).

Someone suggested installing the OpenGL drivers that came with the card,
rather than using the opengl32.dll that comes with windows....

I suspect that this may already have been done, as I upgraded my STB drivers
to the latest one ver 1.52 as well (shouldn't this have also installed any
OpenGL driver/dll automatically?)

If any other Riva TNT users (especially STB Velocity 4400) have experienced
*** problems with F1RS, GPL or any other game and have overcome them, I
would be ever so grateful for any help/tips/advice you could give!

Thank you
Jay J

I tried to get my Viper550 (TNT) to work with MGPRS2 (F1RS2), and GPL (with
the OpenGL beta patch). I couldn't get the MGPRS2 to work (I think if you
use the TNT drivers from Nvida, I think it might work). I was very
unimpressed with the OpenGL patch.
You know all this already, what I did, I just put my Voodoo2 back in my
computer. So my advice to you is to get a Voodoo2.

I occasionally use the CL TNT with the reference drivers and it works, with
the 1.09d patch.

Erik, I have the 1.09 D3D patch installed, is that the same as the 1.09d ???

I'll try reinstalling it tonight, and if that doesn't work will try Nvida's
reference drivers, if all fails, i'll shoot you an email and we can go from
there...

Thanks
Jay J

That would be a downgrade.

A downgrade for F1RS? I guess you don't know what the hell
you are talking about. Plus you *ADD* it to your system not
replace the TNT. I have both cards... I also know what I'm talking
about.

Not for F1RS or any other native Glide application.

Nope. Not when someone makes a foolish statement like 3dfx is a
downgrade for F1RS.

You should ask around and make sure that this game supports tnt cards. Also,
go to the ubisoft site and see if there is a upgrade or patch for the game.
You may have to reinstall the game since you have a new video card. This
should be a last resort.

Well, sorry this is a late response, but I've been away....

After reinstalling and adding the D3D patch (1.09) it works like a charm!
And holy shit!!!! The quality of graphics and frames per second are
OUTSTANDING!!!!

It's like starting all over again :-)

Thank's
Jay J

PS: As for getting a 3dfx card..... I went Riva due to AGP 2x, image
quality, RAM (16 megs vs 12 for voodoo II) and I can still add a 3dfx (or
two) in the future, hopefully when Voodoo III comes out and Voodoo II prices
drop!

I wasn't about to buy a voodoo II, then find out 2 or 3 months from now,
that if I would have waited, I could have saved a ton of $$$$.....

Well, silly posts like yours deserve an emotional response...

OTOH, Greg is ALWAYS cranky... ;^)

Why was it stupid? Because I think that buying a specific 3D card because of ONE
game is quite pointless, especially regarding F1RS which probably isn't a game
that will be played much in a few months ? People have different opinions.
Respect it.
