Best current F1 sim?

Yep, the F1 season has just started again (Come on Lewis!) and rekindled
my interest in F1 Sims, so...

What is the best current F1 Sim?

I already own several older versions, Microprose Grand Prix 2 & 3, EA F1
2000 & 2002, etc.

I have a demo version of rFactor, but was not that impressed, and am not
sure if there is a good F1 add on for it?

Info would be appreciated, thanx...

Sorry, should also have clarified, I'm interested in a MODERN F1 sim,
not retro, (as I have GPL for that - Obviously!)

I think you won'get past rFactor if you want to run the current
season's car liveries. All other sims feature older seasons (some may
have been updated to recent years), and the only 2008 season project I
know of is for rFactor and called

F1RFT_2008_Basicpack.exe

I only managed to download it yesterday and haven't tried it out yet,
so I cannot really comment on its quality. On the other hand, the MMG
mods are usually very good, and the 2007 version 1.0 has recently been
released (check rfactorcentral, for instance).

All the best, uwe

Here's the download URL for the 2008 mod I memtioned earlier:

I'm not a huge fan of rFactor, and I thought the F1 mod was a bit too
fast for my liking. Then I watched that programme where Richard Hammond
'learned' to drive an F1 car in a day, and changed my mind. Those things
are a bit quick, so it's probably pretty accurate. :-)

Anyway I get mod-fatigue when I think of rFactor these days. So many
vehicles to choose from... so I end up choosing none.

If you haven't tried F1 mods for rF in a while, check out F1RFT 2008
which was discussed in another thread. I was pleasantly surprised by
its driveability and the pure fun factor of throwing these cars around
Sepang-GP4.

The "problem" with simulating F1 is that the pure exhilaration, terror
and need to do things so quickly when driving an F1 car ably
demonstrated by Hammond is mostly lost. The doing things quickly bit
comes across which at the risk of being flamed makes it feel a bit
arcade. It doesn't help that F1***pits look like toys these days too.

Driving one for real the sheer performance, grip and braking capability
would be simply awe inspiring, plus the physical effort would have most
of us coming in after just a few laps.

I just don't think modern F1 works well in simulations. Of course your
mileage may vary...

That I really don't get. You prefer restaurants with 3 menus max, right?
If they offer 20 different meals, you'll rather eat somewhere else, right?

You can discount a lot of those, as they are made by people that are in
the kitchen only to make good *looking* meals, regardless of how the
meal *tastes*.

Actually, your analogy is inappropriate. It is not like preferring a
restaurant with 3 menus max. A typical racing game already has an
assortment of racing vehicles that is equivalent to that of a typical
restaurant menu. On the other hand, rFactor is like walking into a
restaurant with 1000 different meals listed. This is a problem, as one
of the roles of a restaurant is not to give you every possible food
imaginable, but to reduce the choice down to those that are especially
good - at least in terms of their ability to make them...

Of course, I disregarded meals that taste like cardboard, or something.

There are at least 20 GREAT mods for rfactor, and there are restaurants
with 20 GREAT menus. I'm just not confused by the big number of
mods, I just drive one at a time. Of course, I'm not talking about MP,
because that may well be a nightmare...

I agree for all the reasons you mention. I think that's why GPL was able
to be so successful... it's the right era of car technology to model for
those driving a desk, not a 3D object.

I'd rather have no choice at all, and a *superb* meal, than lots of
choice and little satisfaction. :-)

Well there are certainly some SUPERB meals available for rFactor.
(  Of course I don't even understand someone that complains about too many
choices. )
But -

I don't care for dirt racing or oval racing (show-business-racing).
That sure doesn't stop me from racing in multiple 79 mod leagues!!
It doesn't stop me from having a blast racing the 'preview' CSGT mod!
It doesn't stop me....   oh nevermind... don't want to put to many 'options'
here and confuse or frustrate anyone    ;)
