Force Feedback will wont work on my system

by Ben Frankli » Fri, 11 Jun 2004 07:55:43

I purchased a Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback( on E-bay ) and I now
think it will not work on my System . I am running Windows XP , and it keeps
coming up  " Drivers Software 3.x installs Drivers that are incompatible
with this version of windows"  Is there a patch to fix this or will it just
not work . I have hooked gameport into USB adapter and system recognizes usb
adapter , but nothing else works.......Any help will be greatly appreciated
. Also if I have to buy another wheel , Which is a good one to buy ?

I don't believe that Microsoft released drivers for XP, but I could be
wrong.

Anything by Logitech is a good purchase (the Momo's in particular).

Ben.

XP wont do Gameport very well, not even thier own controllers, but I guess
maybe a few have gotten this to work, like you are attempting?  IMHO.. you
needed the USB ONLY version.  This is the one I have.  Because the USB
versions are newer, & would have had the newest driver-software on the CD
(IIRC it is called 4.0 and might not ever have been available on the MS
site)...  Dont dispare, I know I found the drivers on the net, like at
driverguide or something, using google I believe, looking for Sidewinder
Force Feedback Wheel (not necessarily in that order, because it was a while
ago) then later of course I bought me the newer version of that wheel which
had the newest CD (red ***ed- version 2 unit))...  since I am not at
home, and dont have Photographic memory I could double check those version
numbers, hopefully if I remmeber too do so, tonight and post a follow up.
If you have a big enough email inbox, I might see if I can find it, & could
send you the zip I downloaded?  I dont have any FTP space and I think it is
15 megs or so.

When you install the newest version (think it shows up as 3.8 Sidwinder
profiler part and 4.0 drivers or something) winXP warns it is not for your
OS, But you tell it to install it anyhow and install ALL the profiles...
but if you got the older 3.08(???) version...  Well I am pretty dayum sure,
I dont think it will work, least that is what I kept reading.

BTW, What kind of GP-USB adapter, because I know that the ones sold at radio
shack... well I know It might as well be paper cups and string...  you need
the one called ...  "rockfire usb adapter" if I recall.  even then I dont
know what the PC see's it as?

Good luck.  you could dual boot win98 with what you have...  (Iam "cheap"
enough this would be one solution for me, maybe not you).

Force Feedback will wont work on my system

I currently have a MSFF plugged into the gameport on my XP Pro system. If I
recall correctly, I plugged it in without installing any of the Sidewinder
software as was suggested at the time from help in this group and the force
feedback works fine. I obviously don't have the ability to set various
profiles for different games, but then I only really use it for GPL and
NetKar and I have no problems as such with the standard configuration. I
don't know whether this will work with your gameport to USB adapter, but
have you tried plugging it into your gameport directly if you have one.

Hope this helps.

Kind Regards
