MSFF wheel and analogue pedals!

by Vince Fishe » Sat, 05 Jun 1999 04:00:00

Have you bought the MSFF wheel and really like the wheel but hate those
pedals (they are almost useless for GPL IMHO) and have a decent set of
analogue pedals lying around.
well it is actually possible to directly wire them up to the MSFF wheel
and use them in either single axis or split axis using a profile as
normal. I had been told this wasn't possible but thought id try anyway
:-)
Handy if you cant connect anything up to your usb port.
Force feedback will work with split axis pedals for gpl 1.1 (I cant wait
:-)
Only downside is that I haven't found a way to calibrate them through
windows ,so a game that doesn't calibrate joysticks itself will not work
very well. Not a problem with GPL.

For those games I've used a home made splitter cable with which I can
set up the pedals as a 2nd joystick all using the same game port on my
SBlive as the msff, with the help of a couple of programs called rbfix
and thrustmaster pro panel. Only problem with this was that I couldn't
use split axis and have FF at the same time. That is why I looked for an
alternative

So only problem is if a game doesn't calibrate joysticks and allow the
use of 2 joysticks I have to use the MS pedals that came with the wheel,
But usually those games are very arcadey and the pedals aren't a
problem.

I was very pleased when I realised that the connection for the pedals to
the wheel is actually exactly the same as a super-VHS connector which
made things very easy.

If any1 is interested I'll explain how to wire it up.

Yes! Please explain, I'm VERY interested in getting an FF wheel for GPL 1.1,
but worried about the poor reviews of the pedals on almost all of the FF
wheels.

I would love to be able to keep using my current pedals of my T2
wheel (I have modified the pedals for split axis) with whichever
FF wheel I buy once the 1.1 patch is out.

Please send or post the details, many thanks in advance.

OK I'll try and explain, might be easier to send a diagram.

FF wheel connector

        2       3

        1       4

        pot 1                           pot 2
        A       B       C               D       E       F

connect         1       -       E
                2       -       C
                C       -       D
                A       -       F
                3       -       A
                4       -       B

I bought a S-VHS cable and cut off 1 end. This had 2 cables 1 red and 1
white, and inside each was another cable these were wired up as follows.

FF wheel connector

2 inner red     3 inner white

1 outer red     4 outer black

If any1 can find a way of calibrating it in win9* that would be great.
Might just be a registry hack.

Actually I think that came out quite clear ( I hope so)
If U have anymore ?'s feel free to ask ( I will help if I can )

If you get a USB wheel, e.g. Logitech, you can use it together with the gameport
connected T2. No rewiring, works fine in GPL. You can use the Logitech pedal as
a clutch for better starts.

The only problem I noticed is that the T2 gameport control in Windows 98 must be
installed before the Logitech gameport driver is installed. If the Logitech is
installed first, Windows refuses to detect the T2. Your mileage may vary.

Absolutely right Keith.
And of course if u can find a USB to Joystick converter that will work
also ( I haven't been able to find one in the UK yet, seen some
advertised in the US) that's why I've had to use the re-wiring, which is
incredibly easy also. You could plug the T2 pedals into the USB
converter and the FF device into the usual gameport if its anything like
the MSFF wheel which needs midi connected to use FF.
This way is only any good for games that allow use of more than 1
joystick I.e. which hopefully more and more will.

I think its a great shame that programmers cant write there games like
GPL where you can calibrate and set up any axis available for use.
GPL really shows them all how it should be done.

The re-wiring is really for people who already own a MSFF wheel and
aren't happy with those pedals , which I should think is most of them
:-)  and also haven't got the USB option.

The wiring way I have shown would be perfect for all games if there was
some way to calibrate them in windows, because it would all be as 1
joystick. So if any1 has any ideas I'd really appreciate hearing them.
Since it can be done in games like GPL there must be a way to do it in
windows, maybe just a registry hack?

Yes, thanks much Vince, hope to put your explanation to work as soon
as I pick up an FF wheel.

Thanks.

Wow, that's nice to know, and gives a big boost to USB in making my choice
of what FF wheel to purchase.

Thanks for passing on the info, hope to make my decision on which FF wheel
soon.

MSFF wheel and analogue pedals!

Hiya guys i just found out how to calibrate my MSFF wheel with direct
connection of analogue pedals in win9* using the wiring imentioned
earlier, with either split axis or single selected .Using a great little
program that i noticed others talking about to sort out there problems
its called DXtweak.
I can now use my all time fav pedals with the msff wheel in any game i
have because its all as 1 joystick.A big advantage over having to use
the usb port as well as the game port where the pedals are assigned as a
different joystick, where a game like colin mcrae rally cant use them.
This is the holy grail ive been trying to find in the wheel pedal setup
for sometime .Now I can stop mucking around with wires and programs and
get on with some good racing :-)

No, because I think the MSFFW pedals are the best of the lot :)

Me too. I upgraded from a Thrustmaster Formula T2 and the pedals on
the Microsoft Wheel are head&shoulders above it and the rest of the
readily available wheels.

I test-drove the Logitech, Thrustmaster Force, some wheel from CH, and
some cheapie one and the Microsoft, while being the second most
expensive, was easily the best of the bunch. Of course, all of this is
just my humble opinion.
