MSFF Wheel + self built pedals

by Hermann Kau » Tue, 10 Aug 1999 04:00:00

Hi all.

I built a***pit with 100k potis and it worked great. But now I have
purchased a MSFF wheel and want to integrate it into my***pit. With
the wheel there is no problem but the tension of the pedals is ***
and also they don't fit into my***pit.
Now I want to plug my pedals into the MSFF wheel but the MS pedals are
built up with 50k potis. If possible I don't want to exchange the 100k
potis in my pedals.
Has anyone tried to do the same or where can I get information about
it?

Greetings, Hermann.

Herman u can connect those pots up and then use a program called DXTweak
to recalibrate the directx levels to suit.I used to do this but after
getting fed up having to do this every time i switched the puter on,i
got a usb to joystick adapter and ran my pedals on that.It works
smoother this way too, although the pedals can then only be used by
programs that allow the use of more than 1 joystick.

Vince thanx for your answer.
My problem: The MSFF is already plugged into the joystick/midi port.
Therefore I cannot plug my pedals into it.
Did you try to connect your pedals directly with your MSFF?

Yes Hermann,i connected the pedals directly to the connector on the
wheel which is exactly the same as a SVHS connector.
I wired my pedals up exactly the same as in the msff pedals and then
using dxtweak u could set the min/centre/max range settings to use the
full range.Although it never was as smooth as it should be.
But it certainly works, and at least this way it would work with all
games, not just games that allow the use of 2 joysticks etc.
If u need to know the wiring of pins i have them written down somewhere
and will hunt them up for you.

That would be nice, Vince.
Another problem with your answer:
that."
Does that mean your pedals are connected to the usb port now and the
MSFF without pedals is connected to the joystick/midi port?
Are your pedals self built?
Which racing games cannot handle more than one joystick? I want to
play GPL 1.1, MGPR, NFS4.

Exactly right.I can have the MS pedals plugged in on the msff wheel and
have 4 pedals if i wanted to!

Not really but they are made up from 2 sets of pedals with a few little
alterations and additions here and there.Or at least they were when i
had them plugged into the MSFF wheel directly.I now have the pedals back
as they originally were, they are from a digital edge f1 sim, large solid
all metal things.Although i am using some springs from guard seats out
of trains i got from work.

those all work fine i think but colin mcrae rally,toca1,toca2 and
unfortuanately there are many more that don't.

OK I'll try and explain the wiring

FF wheel connector

        2      3

        1      4

        pot 1                          pot 2
        A      B      C              D      E      F

connect         1      -      E
                2      -      C
                C      -      D
                A      -      F
                3      -      A
                4      -      B

I bought a S-VHS cable and cut off 1 end. This had 2 cables 1 red and 1
white, and inside each was another cable these were wired up as follows.

FF wheel connector

2 inner red    3 inner white

1 outer red    4 outer black

I hope that is clear enough,

Vince,
everything works ok. The MSFF doesn't insist on 50k potis but accepts
my 100k potis.
I got the dxtweak.exe called it and found many parameters to tune. Now
I have a lot of questions:
1. No glance what to do.
2. No glance why I should change anything. Everything seems ok. Are
there any problems I didn't notice?
3. Which advantage may I gather if I***around with this
parameters?
4. Which changes did you make there?
Hermann Kauer.

Excuse me that I follow up my own posting but I just read the
"documentation" of dxtweak. Nearly all above questions are answered.
Still remaining:
1. Everything seems ok. Why should I change anything? Did you notice
any problems I didn't notice?
2. Which changes did you make?
Thanks, Hermann Kauer.

Only the wheel works with optical components.
The pedals work with 50k potis.

MSFF Wheel + self built pedals

On my setup the range of the pedals (ie the calibration would stop only
after i pressed the pedals down a 1/4 of the way)was so small i had to
reset them everytime i turned on the machine to be able to use the full
movement of my pedals. This isnt a problem for gpl because that can be
calibrated fine within its own program, but for games that rely on the
win98 calibration i had to use dxtweak.
Im glad it all worked ok,just wondering ,do the pedals feel as smooth as
they used to.mine were never quite as good directly connected to the
msff wheel as they were when using the original setup or as using a USB
to joystick converter, but it wasnt too bad either.
