Yes, yes, yes. Up until this morning my PB at the Ring was a
10:12 with two dead-stop spins. I felt I'd learned the track (even
though my all-time lap count didn't exceed 30), but with this feeling
of mastery over the track I had arrived at what must be the most
strenuous situation in GPL: when know you would instantly squeeze
a tremendously fast lap if only you could get a clean lap, and then,
driving over your abilities, simply keep mashing your car in the
worst imaginable places (La Source, Meuspath, you know the sort)
until you just quit, so frustrated there's smoke coming from your ears.

It took me an incredible amount of restraint to keep cool and drive
safely. But the 9:49.xx lap this morning was co clean I could have
eaten my ***y breakfast off it! You can't possibly imagine the panic
I was in when I started braking for Meuspath on that lap... unless
you've been there too. .)

But I could use some expert help on one particular section which
more often that not is rather fatal to my laps. Schwalbenschwanz,
I think it is, or the two-three curves preceding the smaller Karussel.
I just can't understand how the car starts pirouetting when I dive
between those chequered railings even at crawl speed. I kinda suspect
it has to do with the sudden elevation change, because it feels
quite a lot like those two beautifully hideous downhill lefthanders
in Mosport which I also regularly turn into ballet exercises. Can
you give any clues about how this kind of curves should be negotiated?

For me the Mosport trackguide
http://lightsoutracing.simplenet.com/trackguides/index.html
with its replay and setup was invaluable.

I think I know which one you mean.  Normally I'm in 4th gear as I
approach the first right-hand part.  I discovered that if I brake too
hard or too late here, then the back end wants to start coming round
because I'm not braking in a straight line.  So, brake early and change
down to 3rd just before you turn in for the first part.  Then straighten
out and brake again and change down to 2nd.  You should now be able to
turn right and through the chequered walls without the car getting away.
Make sure that you are braking in a straight line for both corners and
earlier than normal for safety sake otherwise, like I said, the car can
definitely become unbalanced.

No person's opinions can be said to be
more correct than another's, because each is
the sole judge of his or her own experience.

Try some of Alison's Ferrari setups, I did on my second ever finished lap
around 9.48.00. They are truly much more easier to drive and contrlol

I know how you feel.

My PB at the Ring was for a very long time 9.39 with Lotus. Then I changed
to Ferrari because I could not handle the Lotus. With Ferrari I could barely
get under 10 minutes. Then I read on Alisons pages that maybe Cooper would
be the right car for me.

And soon my personal best was 9.15.

Yesterday I set my target to breaking the 9 minute barrier and getting
my handicap below 100. I drove at the Ring for three hours. I was driving
at my limits and too often over the limits. One lap I messed up at
Meuspath, one lap I managed to spun at the Kleine Karussel on a very
hot lap..... But I could manage two "clean" laps (well, with a ride at
the bankings) and the best was 9.01.33, the other one was 9.04. My handicap
went below 100 but still the nine minute barrier... If only I could have
been able to relax and stay in control I could have EASILY gone below
9 minutes. I was so frustrated with myself, 3 hours and only 2 "good" laptimes.

But that is the Ring...

Been there, done that, got the ... no wait a minute... Did get NO T-shirt!
:-)

What I have done, and could say that it works for me, is that
download a replay, put it in car view and 'drive along'.
Use the wheel and pedals like it was you driving.
Thats what I've done.
