I second the suggestion to reinstall. A new motherboard will have a
different IDE controller, AGP chipset, USB controller, etc. You might
get away without a reinstall, but why start on such slippery ground?
I second the suggestion to keep a Voodoo for GPL. Your Voodoo2 should
let you hotlap with high detail at 800x600 at close to maximum
framerate. As you add cars (e.g., at the starting grid) I think the
CPU is taxed more heavily than the video card. If you want more than
800x600, you probably want a Voodoo3 or Voodoo5. The latter will let
you try anti-aliasing. (I wish I hadn't seen the GPL FSAA
screenshots. Now I can't stand the jaggies at the side of the road.)
N3, as a Direct3D game, is pretty safe.
Since you're looking at mid-range Athlons, I assume that money is an
object. You're not paying $200 bucks for that extra 50 MHz, so you
probably don't want to pay $300+ for a video card. The Voodoo3 is a
decent value and the drivers seem to have finally settled down. If
you can stretch, the GeForce (DDR preferable) is a good match.
Personally, I'm waiting for AMD's next generation CPU. By the time I
can afford it, I may have enough for a Voodoo5 5500. Just the ticket
for taking the jaggies out of GPL.
