Slightly OT: DirectX 6.1 Expired??

by Tim McCauslan » Thu, 01 Apr 1999 04:00:00

Last night I fired up NR99 and just before the intro screen a window popped
up and said "Beta DirectDraw has Expired, please update"  and now the game
locks up after just a few seconds of racing.
I reinstalled DirectX 6.1 and it's still the same.  In the DirectX
Diagnostics it shows just about all my files as being expired.  What's going
on here, is 6.1 just a beta?  Do I need to go back to 6.0? My files are
dated 11/4/98.
Please help me out here I'm very confused.

I had the same but on FIFA99 . I went to the latest games mag and installed 6.1 from
its cover CD.
All now is OK.

There were some sites that had dx6.1 available to download but did not
upgrade them to the actual finished versions.  There is no difference other
than the expiration date.  You can get a new copy from many cd magazines
that have demos or the microshit web site.

When DX61 first came out it WAS Beta.  You must've either gotten it
that way or from someone ELSE who got it that way.

Hmm. I had this too, upgraded off the March PCGamer CD, and I'm still
getting the message. It doesn't do it on all games, but it does it on
MXMadness (4 notices, then plays normally).

Hope I don't have to totally s***DirectX and start over to eliminate
the messages.

Tim,

There is a program out there, looking for it, that will uninstall dx 6.1.
Then you could reinstall from the gamers cd.  If I find it I will let you
know.

I found one off of CNET. Although it warned to back up the registry, I
was living dangerously and didn't... It hosed Win98, and I had to
re-install. DOH!
I suppose I was about due for a fresh format/install anyway. =8^/

I've just noticed this 'beta expired' warning - problem is, when running
Colin McRae Rally DX6.1 (BETA) works, whilst the release version off the
Microsoft Upgrade Site DOESN'T - causes the same problems related to
DX6.0.

Anyone got a solution?.

Thanks...

You need to install MS Draw 98 (unfortunately this requires you to have at
least 1 of the MS Office components installed).

I have a customer who periodically orders computers with NT4
installed on its own 100MB partition so it can be reformatted and
reinstalled every 6 months.
Pretty funny just how easily we accept that we NEED to
reinstall our OS every so often.  OS/2 was never that way!!
        Now, back to racin'/arguin'.

Draw 98 - can you please supply a URL?

Thanks...

Lets not confuse DirectDraw and MS Draw at all 8)

All you need to do install a final DirectX6.1 build (windows update in win98,
www.microsoft.com/directx/  for win95

Just done it - works a treat :-) - Thanks for clearing up the confusion.
