Thriller/Directx 6.1 works sort of

by Kevin Caldwel » Mon, 15 Feb 1999 04:00:00

I recently had to upgrade to Win98. It came with Directx6.0. My faithful
Thriller 8M AGP, which worked perfectly under Win95 and Directx5.2, would
not run GPL at all with Directx 6.0 or 6.1. The start-up screen would just
come up all garbled.

The Directx un-installer utility is not available at the web site, and I was
desparate to get it working yesterday. I installed some Rendition
"reference" drivers from:
http://www.racesimcentral.net/

V2k_3.0b3.zip

They allow GPL to run, but have some problems. The Windows screens look a
bit odd, and have random different colored dots here and there. It now
forgets my monitor type, and refresh rate on every shut down. I have to
re-size my screen to 800x640 (or whatever it is) before booting GPL. The
screen refresh rate in the menu sections of GPL looks like it is about 50
Hz, although once in the car it looks OK.

Not a great situation, but I made the league race. Thanks to Brent Martin
for pointing out the drivers to me, a fellow competitor in our League.

I hope going back to Directx 5.2, once the un-installer is avalable again,
will allow me to use the drivers from the Hercules site (th3dw085.exe) that
are much more refined than the Rendition Beta drivers. I'm open to any other
suggestions.

The Rendion Beta drivers are so buggy that I would recommend the "not-so-buggy" v95 drivers by Rendition. They run GPL beautifully with directx6.1.

Bad news Kevin. I have run a thriller 8 meg pci with dx6 for months now with no
problems at all. In fact I run real old drivers 072.3465! It seems to me I have
seen reports of the agp version being more problematic. Perhaps an exchange is
in order.
