Finally!

After struggeling for a month with this game, I finally manage to beat the
AI drivers in a novice race at Monza. I won by 3.5 sec. In every lap except
the first, I produced times I deared not dream about only 2 days ago (4 sub
1.30s, 1 slightly over). I drove the Lotus. In to amazing days, my PB has
dropped from 1.30.88 to 1.29.09!

All of a sudden my driving became amazing. The squash ball trick (cut squash
ball under the brake pedal) did miracles. Not to mention the registry
tweaking that made my mirrors stop flickering. I got both fixes from this
NG. Gee, I love r.a.s.

Now it's time to move to another track. I have to prepare for entering the
world of WinVROC. Nurnburgring, here I come!

Happy racing, everyone!

I've just had the same revelation with the brake pedal. I knew about the
squash ball but I don't play squash so I didn't have a ball... I used an old
spring left over from a past car (no, not the front suspension coil spring!)
and now have a really solid pedal to press against and have to press harder
rather than further. I only hope that the pedals (MSFF) are up to the
strain. All of a sudden I can brake much later into corners and I'm much
more consistent - I might try online racing now that I can actually do a few
laps without sliding off with all tyres smoking.

Over the past 18 months (or more) I must have read a thousand messages in
this NG saying that GPL is unplayable with less than 20fps but no one has
ever said it's unplayable without modifying your brake pedal. If you haven't
done it yet,

BTW What's "the registry tweaking that made my mirrors stop flickering"?
I've installed George M. Smiley's Glide2x.dll patch to reduce the mirror
update rate but this sounds like something different.

TNT and Geforce users experiece mirror flickering when using the OpenGL
patch. The flickering can be fixed with some registry editing. The fix was
posted in this NG a couple a days ago. Before this fix came along, I
serously  consider ditching my Geforce PRO and return to my old Voodoo
Banshee.
