GPL - I just won my first race!

by John Courtn » Sat, 24 Oct 1998 04:00:00

Hi,
Well it took a little under 2 weeks but I finally won my first race
in GPL! :)  3 midterms in one week kinda cuts down on the seat time,
so I'am still in the Novice trainer!  Anyway, I ran my best practice time
in the Eagle (a 1:54:87, stop lauching I can hear you!)  Which put me in
6th for the start.  When the green flag dropped I got an awesome start
and was in the lead before Curva Grande.  For the rest of the race I was
mostly trying to keep my lead, the AI were faster than me in the corners,
but I could hold my own on the straights. (I'll have to start tweaking
with my setup I guess, the one I was using was the default setup, just
with 4 gallons of feul.)  I kept the lead, and except for a couple of
close "oh sh*t" moments at Lesmos, I ran consistent lap times.  The race
was close, less than one second for the top 3!  I exported my race
results, and the cool thing I noticed was that it is saved in html format
with all of the stats you could ever want about your race. (I was
expecting a text file like N2/ICR2, it was a nice suprise, nice job
Papy!).  It may sound strange but GPL actually makes you feel like you
have acomplished soemthing when you win!

Sorry for rambeling,
John

>so I'am still in the Novice trainer!

Ditto.  Though I occasionally do others.  I want to stay in a trainer till I
win my first "maiden" race (may be a while)

Since my best time is about the same (1:54.54 in the Eagle), I would never
"lauch" at you :-)

Cheater!  :-)  In the novice, it is nigh-impossible to *not* get a great
start.  So I purposely make sure I don't take advantage and try to just hold
my start position instead of moving up 3,4 or more spots.

For the rest of the race I was

Ditto.  I'm a good deal faster in the strights (due to "global_hype" and
novice multiplyer?).  But lose some in the turns.  I'm losing less and less as
I get more seat time.

I've fiddled, but haven't found anything much better in the turns.  You can
drop to 3 gal and still finish the 6-lapper.

I'll have to check this out!

Gpl newbie here-- How do you go about getting a race in the training cars?
Everytime I go to the race screen I have to use the Grand Prix cars which
are still a real handful for me to drive. Are the competing AI cars also at
the lower horsepower level?
Thanks in advance

In the sim, you cannot run a training car in a race. You can only select the
less powerful cars in testing mode.
I believe there are some instructions at Alison's site to modify some files
to make this possible. http://nh.ultranet.com/~alison/gpl/

Per that site (a must for GPL'rs), modify the player.ini file created in the
players/yourname folder.  Change the "driver rating" in the  [personal
information]  section  to:
1   for trainer
2   for advanced trainer
3   for GP

It is best to set up a different player profile (done from the in-game "player
info" screen) for each class.  First, so you don't have to exit the game
to modify the file every time you want to switch class.  And also because the
"global hype" system of the game keeps track of your 10 fastest times and sets
the opponent speed accordingly.  So if you do some laps in a GP car, you might
find the opposition faster than your liking when you switch back to a trainer.

Thanks D.M. Useful stuff indeed!
