Magny-Cours.  I think I am not the only one who has a new appreciation for
this amazing track.  Never liked it much in F1 sims.

What is interesting, that you should try yourself, is get a really good
rhythm going there in GTR2002.  Then switch over to F12002 and do the track
in a F1 car.  I couldn't believe how well I was driving.  It was like the
car was glued to the track and I knew every nuance of every turn.

I think it is just too difficult for someone of my skill level to learn a
track in a modern F1 car.  But drive a road car or a sports car for a few
dozen laps and you can then have a hope of honing your reactions and braking
points, etc. in the must faster, more precise F1 cars.

Not only is this mod the best all around sim this side of GPL, it actually
helps you enjoy the original title, too.  Amazing.

Agreed.  It's kind of like driving the F2's in GPL, or the GTQ's in
SCGT.  There's nothing like driving a slower car to help you learn a
circuit.  I've been driving the N-GT's at Spa, and have noticed several
things about the line that I think I can work back into the F1 cars.
That is, assuming I ever quit GTR long enough to try the F1 cars
again...

Hmm.. I thought the same thing after running MBTR way back when.  Take a
spin around the same track, first in a big racing rig, then in an 850hp F1
car.  Exhilarating isn't a long enough word...!  ;)

P.s.: Yeah, I've got a whole new appreciation for M-C, too!

M-C?  Master Charge?  Priceless!

This seems to be an effect I have noted on most "modern"
tracks. It seems I just did not have the patience or "feel" to
learn these tracks on ISI physics in an F1 car, but after 20
laps or to in the Porsche or any other GTR car I somehow fare
much better at these venues.

If it only wasn't for the sucky multiplayer, we'd have a killer
sim at our hands right now... sigh.

Cheers,

Uwe

Indeed.  I'm not sure what we can do about it.  Anyone created one of those
online petition thingies to send to EA?

I've always liked the idea of a wrapper for programs
which have crappy network code.  For example, you
have (on both client and server), a high performance
udp based comms system.  Then for each game you
wish to make "internet ready" you write an adaptor or
translator.

I think Kali did this with IPX, but I'm thinking about
a wrapper for ip based games and with specific support
for certain games.  This way, a basic online sim racing
client could be used to connect to various games - the
wrapper simply uses the appropriate adaptor.

The work in writing adaptors would be in reverse
engineering the existing network code (sniff packet data
probably) and writing a translation which removes
data you don't need and effectively compresses the
rest.  This puts more load on the CPU and less on the
often narrow connection.

I'm not sure how much sense I'm making... it's like
adding your own layer of communications to the mix
which is dedicated to making things faster and more
reliable.  The local game would effectively be
connecting to localhost.

Just a thought - it's much better than my helicopter
with a ceiling fan idea..

No.  When singing the praises of consoles in the "Car Games for Car Guys"
story I just wrote for Motor Trend, I omitted the PC's biggest
advantage...as we now all see with the spectacular GTR mod: Mods.  Someday,
I suppose, the console "community" may be able to access the innards of
their games and create mods to share with their buds, but for the
foreseeable future, what you see is what you get.  Sure, console games ship
without the need for patches (mostly), but the downside is that they're set
in stone.  IOW, hands off.  If GTR is any indication, PCs are still the only
way to go for us grizzled hard-core types.

It's bad enough with the supposed grown-ups who join online GTR races in F1
cars.  They look like Vipers but they go like a bat outta hell.  How moronic
is that?  (And where's the anti-cheat code to prevent it?)

Looking forward to that one Steve; when's it due for print?  Bound to be
better than C&D's last game article! ;-)

Steve,

That's why I wrote it!  I tried to get C&D to do a decent story on console
games a year ago and was horrified when that article appeared.  The Editor
claimed the piece had been assigned in his absence, and had somehow escaped
his attention during the editing process.  I figured why bother, and queried
Motor Trend, where my old bos, David E. Davis, had just taken over (his biz
card read, "Temporary Editor-in-Chief").  He installed an old pal of his
from the Automobile magazine days (Kevin Smith; no relation), and we waltzed
the idea around for a while before it came out as a Top Ten list of
must-have car games for the PS2 and the Xbox.  I'm not sure where they're at
with it; it was originally supposed to be out now.  I've signed a contract,
and they tell me they like the story but the copy is too long, so they've
whittled it down to a husk of its original self.  We'll see....
