F1/GTR2002: how to get correct aspect ratio with widescreen monitor?

Even if I change resolution to e.g. 1600x900, it still looks like
the game assumes a 4:3 aspect ratio :-(, anyone out there who know
how to fix this?

I do not think F1 2001/2 or GPL for that matter supports widescreen
mode, so the cars all come out looking flattish, I have tried playing
with the monitor display itself, but ended up losing too much real
estate on the screen, which defeats the purpose of having a widescreen
monitor in the first place... I have not tried Powerstrip yet, perhaps
that can be used to come up with some custom resolution and horizontal
timing to make it work. Just an idea.

For the moment I am just running 1024x768x32 on my Unity Motion 32"
monitor, the games are still quite enjoyable even with the wrong
aspect ratio...

[snip]

Actually, GPL works very well since it uses a letterboxed
driving screen running with a separate video mode: just
maximizing the height of the driving screen image in the
monitor setups makes it close to perfect (without affecting
the menu screens).
