how does the new version differ from the old one? i found the old one to be
kind of a bastard to drive sometimes, is the new one the same way? what else
has changed?

its crap....not worth bothering with

how can it be the 'same way' if it is a totally seperate and different
project..?

unless of course they copied the 'same way' effect...

F1 2k1 has several problems with items like tire wear and heat buildup
that created problems while driving.  This was corrected for 2k2.  Also the
Simbin team had a fair ammount of inpjut for a wish-list of items to make
2k2 more mod friendly.
At the end of the day, GTR is still a mod, but it is head and shoulders
above FIA_GTv3 and superior to many commercial sims.
I suspect if you didn't like FIA_GTv3 then you may have issues with GTR
2k2.  But that is only my guess.   I used to be able to scrub off speed in
FIA by cranking the wheel and locking the brakes.  Doesn't work now.  I used
to loose front traction and start skidding with no hope of recovery.  Now I
can over-drive a turn entry and still recover enough to save the
corner...Try Spa and really push through the 180 degree turn..Revase I think
it's called.  Night and day difference.

don't know about that.  I absolutely loathe FIA GTv3, and I'm
convinced GTR2002 is the best thing since sex.

I loved V1 of the orig. GT Mod.

Hated V2

V3 made me phsyically sick *

For me, GTR2k2 doesnt really have much staying power ( because of the shitty
netcode. even on ADSL, set to 56k, on a number of different servers - still
not had a good race) - but it IS a better sim than any of the previous
version

I shouldnt HAVE to hang in there. Another programming team got this ***
right 4 ***y years ago. Why should ISI get away with this shite

It's just so disgustingly frustrating

I still question whether people are making a fair comparison here.  When
you run GTR in multiplayer, do you restrict the number of visible cars
to 6 like GPL does in multiplayer?  How many players could a GPL server
host if the server was on ADSL and the host was playing on the server?
I am not trying to be a smartass, these are honest questions; I hardly
ever play multiplayer racing games so I don't know the answer to these
questions.  I do play a whole lot of FPS games multiplayer, and have
helped several people to successfully set up and run servers on
everything from cable to a T3.  Smooth multiplayer *** always comes
down to bandwidth, and when comparing the config files for the GTR mod
and GPL, I don't see any reason why you couldn't get the bandwidth of
GTR down to the same level of GPL, as long as you AND THE HOST set it up
in a similar manner.  As a comparison, even in a "simple" game like
Half-Life, there is virtually no way to get a smooth game on a broadband
host unless you restrict all players to the equivalent of modem rates
and keep the number of players down to about 6.  Most people don't seem
to understand that either, but that's the way it is and from what I have
heard about GTR its bandwidth requirements are not remarkably different.

Actually the problem is the FOA, not the FIA.  Not long ago I asked Gjon
Camaj in an e-mail if they could release a dedicated server for F1 2002,
and he replied:

"Unfortunately, the FOA specifically prevents us from adding dedicated
servers to our F1 titles.  In fact, the entire multiplayer feature has
to be carefully put together as to not infringe on anyone's rights."

The way I read this is that they are not allowed to develop any sort of
internet server network, the most they can do is peer-to-peer.  And
peer-to-peer over the internet just doesn't work as well as
client-server, that has been proven in many different games.

Thanks for the information! Why don't they release an
unofficial version with non-descript cars that can be easily
patched? At least that was something Ubisoft did right...

cheers,

For that matter, wouldn't it be nice if they would release a dedicated
server for NASCAR Thunder that could somehow be easily hacked into
working with F1 2002?
