f1 2001 EA vs Ubi

by istof » Thu, 25 Oct 2001 21:17:58

hi,

although the problems i am experiencing with f1 2001 may all be my
fault, i do think that it does appear to be a rushed release.  i guess
the deadline of launching in time with the US GP proved too much.

hope the patch is better.

I am surprised that the sim has been accepted and praised as much as
it has been especially in the light of the complaints about the bugs
in F1RC (well, mainly the AI, anyway).

while i do think that F1 2001 has the potential to be the best modern
sim around, I do think that it was released way before time.

I hope that the patch is just around the corner and that the stability
issues get sorted out.

i have had frequent page faults & machine hangs after reverting to
older video card drivers and the performance barely approaches that of
F1RC on my machine.

The claims of speed being on par with F1RC certainly don't apply on my
setup (AMD Duron 800 + Geforce 2MX + 192mb ram).

I know my machine is hardly the quickest, but F1RC runs ok.

What mystifies me is the relative lack of EA bashing that is going
around compared to the whole UBI vs Papy tirade that surfaced a while
ago.  I guess Thom hasn't played F1 2001 yet or have I missed his
posts / comments on the game.

I'm still undecided about the merits of F1 2001 as I need to get my
machines config stable enough to really test it thoroughly.

To paraphrase a star wars episode one joke,

Why do people spend hours & hours playing F1 2001?

To convince themselves that its actually not that buggy and that they
really don't miss FF that much.

Oh well, I guess I'm grumpy 'cause I dread reloading video drivers
over and over until I get my machine stable :(

Regards all,
istoff

Good points actually.. I myself was more forgiving with F1 2001
because the most important aspect, the driving itself, felt good from
the start. Yes, F1 2001 does have a ridiculous amount of bugs and
short comings, it's indeed released way too early, but at least we
know ISI has a good basis for their next sims..

F1RC was very slick when released, with gorgeous graphics and track
accuracy, but without AI or multiplayer there was not much
long-lasting fun with F1RC. Then the continuous soon-to-be-released
patch bullshit didn't help much either.

To be really honest with you, I love F1 2001, but the amount of bugs
made me stop playing it untill some basic things are fixed.. I refuse
to type the name of my setup everytime I made a tiny change :)
