HELP! P200 and Frame Rate

by Scott Davi » Sun, 15 Sep 1996 04:00:00

I just purchased a new PC.  P200Mhz, 32Mb SDRAM, Imagine 128 series 2
video card with 4MB VRAM, 512K pipeline burst cache and lot of other
goodies.  Anyways, I was expecting to be able to run NASCAR with all of
the detail on and still get an excellent frame rate.  So far that has not
been the case.  I have even reduced the number of opponents and a few
other things to try to help out.  I am running NASCAR in MS-DOS mode out
of Windows 95.

Can anyone give me some setup tips that might increase my frame rate.  If
not is there any computer out there on the market that can run this damn
game with all of the graphics on and get a real good frame rate??  I
thought I was buying one of the top of the line systems and still doesn't
appear to be enough.  What's the use of having all of the detail if I
can't use it anyways?

Thanks in advance,

Scott

w/all details except track texture and all opponents.  No problem.  Of course,
it is the NASCAR optimized for Matrox, but it really flies.

You can turn off a few of the less important ones like track texture and maybe
the grass texture as well and then you should have no problem.  You ask the
point of having all the detail?  Well, as for the track texture, what is the
point?  It looks NOTHING like what the real track looks like in the on-car
camera shots on TV.  So why bother?

Make a DOS boot disk and boot directly to DOS.

I have to add... The Number Nine Imagine 128 series has some of the
worst DOS benchmarks I've ever seen, execpt for a Diamond Viper. They
both SCREAM in Windows, are worthless in DOS. Use either a Matrox
Millenium, or Mystique. Or maybe a S3-based card. These have some of the
best DOS marks and are VERY good at Windows too. The best DOS card I've
tested is the Hercules Stingray 64/+/Video with the ARK2000 chip.
However it is disappointing in Windows.

I have discovered what my problem is.  The Imagine 128 series 2 video
card with 4MB VRAM only has 512K of RAM available in MS-DOS mode.  I
will be exchanging the card for a different one.  Any suggestions??

Also, I am new to Windows 95.  I tried making a boot disk following
some instructions that I got off of the Sierra Support page.  However,
when I boot the computer with the boot disk in the drive.  It still
starts up Windows 95.  How exactly do I make a boot disk that I can
use to boot up cold to DOS??
Will that same disk work if it is in the A drive and I shutdown out of
Windows 95 and choose the option to boot in MS-DOS mode??

Thanks,

Scott

I'm afraid the poor frame rate has nothing to do with running in ms
dos mode. It is the fact that you have a shit video card for runnig
dos based games. I also had an Imagine 128 series 2 and experienced
the same problem. I then changed to a Matrox Millenium and the
increase in frame rate was UNBELIEVABLE.
