No, don't move it "as far away as possible." Every mobo/BIOS is different,
I found. I used to think the PCI slot next to the AGP slot always shared
the same IRQ--not neccessarily true. Check the mobo's docu. If you've lost
it, you can always check the DOS splash screens early in the boot
process--one of them will tell you which piece of h/w (video cards, snd
cards, HDs, etc.) has which IRQ. Just keep moving the sound card around
until it has its own IRQ. SBL!s, particularly, like to have their own IRQ
or they'll misbehave. When you get lockups during a collision or where the
pic freezes but the sound keeps on going (sometimes looping), that's almost
always a sound card problem. Come snd cards can never be made to work
(ESL--?--comes to mind). Make sure you have the latest drivers. In the
case of the SBL!, I *only* install the drivers, never all those bizarre apps
it comes with (to turn yer kybd. into a guitar, etc.), 'cuz they cause no
end of trubble, confusion, & conflicts.

I don't have 98 running at the moment, but can't you go into the device
manager and assign the sound card another IRQ?
I believe that's best done from the BIOS...but it's far less, erm, sporty
doing it by just moving cards around. If you disco the PCI steering (or
whatever it's called) you've opened a can of worms that I, for one, don't
wanna deal with. Moving cards around ain't rocket science; by comparison,
messing with the BIOS, Device Manager, or--God forbid!--the Registry is a
black art.
