Crackling & static in NASCAR 2002 demo?

by John Cauthe » Wed, 02 Jan 2002 03:26:07

I'm having a ball with the new demo, even though I'm restricted to D3D.  The
one problem I'm having is with an annoying crackling or popping static that
becomes audible starting at roughly 6000 RPM, and proportionally gets worse
as the revs increase.  At 9000 RPM my speakers sound like they're ready to
rip themselves apart.  I went into the core.ini and changed the
"force_default_buffer_size" from 3 to a final value of 32, which did help a
bit, but noise is still quite annoying from 7500 RPM on.  I'm using a
Soundblaster Live Value with a Celeron 900 (o/c'd to 1200 Mhz) and 256 MB
PC-133 RAM.

Are there other variables that can be modified to possibly ameliorate this
condition?  I haven't seen any other complaints about it yet.

Thanks,

John Cauthen

Crackling & static in NASCAR 2002 demo?

Okay, I gotta 'fess up now.... I screwed up when I tried to edit my core.ini
file.  What I actually edited was my N4 core.ini, thinking I was editing the
NASCAR 2002 demo core.ini.... DOH!

I went in and chanded the force_default_buffer_size to "5" and got rid of
the most annoying popping.  There's still a higher frequency crackling that
occurs when other cars are around me, but it's not nearly as bothersome.
I'm going to experiment with the buffer size some more to see if I can
improve on that any.

Maybe this painful sound is intended to  simulate the metal rubbing the tires
after racing Buckshot Jones.  :)
