Graeme,
The ThrustMaster Formula T2 is definitely something that
you'll want to check out....it's got nice pedal movement, a padded wheel,
nice shifter feel, and a great way to clamp it to your desk (IMHSBO)
<In My Humble Slightly Biased Opinion> ;-)
        Good luck on the search!

I bought myself the VERY nice Extreme Competition Controls'
Competitive Driving System. Two units, weighing in at something like
16 and 12 pounds ISTR. These don't move around, don't need clamping to
anything, are made to last and have a VERY smooth feel to them. The
precision of the wheel in the likes of Nascar Racing is superb and the
brake pedal has a, deliberately, much stiffer action than the gas
pedal. It has easily added several mph to my lap times and is very
enjoyable to use. I've only just started playing F1GP again, using
this system instead of the keyboard. F1GP isn't as sensitive as Nascar
but I never could play with a joystick for some reason.

BTW, it's made out of steel and the 11inch wheel is covered in suede
leather! There are 4 thumb switches which can be programmed if the s/w
supports 2 joystick ports.

Highly recommended.

Stuart.
