Cart Precision Racing - Keyboard Steering Problems

by Rob » Thu, 06 Nov 1997 04:00:00

I downloaded the CPR demo today, just spent about an hour on it, and
have
a couple of issues to report.

First, is there some way to get a better steering response using the
keyboard?
I don't mean adjusting feel, oversteer or understeer.  The problem I
have is the
delay between hitting the steer-left/right buttons and seeing the wheels
turn & having
the car respond.  There's about a half second delay that makes it really
hard to
enjoy the game.  The graphics speed seems okay, but I eliminated as much
of the
detail as possilble just in case, but it didn't help at all.  I also
adjusted the
non-linear & steering sensitive controls all the way to the right, and
that didn't
help either.

Another problem I found is if I change the keyboard setting to use A for
accelerate,
Z for brake, and the two SHIFT keys to shift; then the brake doesn't
work.  Furthermore,
I get this tiny graphics related text in the corners of my screen such
as:
Vis Poly :515  Total Poly: 5603; Zoom 1.000000; and some stuff on the
bottom about
possibly using too many textures.  Once again, I reduced my graphics to
the minimum, but
it didn't make any difference.  I reassigned my brake to the SPACE bar,
and that worked,
but the text still comes up when I hit the Z key.  If I use the default
settings this
problem doesn't exist.

Lastly; the installation of the demo seems to have screwed up my
Registry.  The
Registry error comes up when I launch the demo.

Anyone else see any of theses problems?  Any suggestions on this,
especially the
steering, will be greatly appreciated.

My system:  Pentium 200MMX, 64MB RAM, Diamond Stealth 2500 Video card w/
2MB VRAM.

Hi Rob,

For more responsiveness form the keys, move the sliders in the controls
dialog to the LEFT. Try setting both at about 1/4.

The text on the screen you mention is debug output!  I just confirmed this.
This behavior is unexpected - it must have been introduced very close to the
final build before the sim went to manufacturing (I raced with this setup a
while before we released & this didn't happen). I'll check to see if there's
anyway to disable now, but I don't think there is. This is an annoying flaw
for keyboard users who like GP2 keyboard setup - we will address it in a
patch.

I got the same text about textures when I first tried the game. If I
remember correctly I set up the keys to A & Z also for gas and brake
(reminds me of playing World Circuit). We may have found some code to
display debug data about the graphics. I will have to play around with
hitting a and z and see if I can reproduce it.

Thanks,  that did the trick.

There was still a slight delay in response from the steering, throttle & brakes
after I made the ajustments.  One of the other threads "CPR sound eats
performance" suggested muting the sound to get better frame rates.  I did this,
and now  there is no delay in any of the controls.  After some tinkering, I
found that I can get the improved performance with the sound on by changing the
Sound Device from the default "Primary Sound Driver" to my "SB AWE32" card.

As for the debug output, I changed my throttle & brake from A/Z to Q/A.

Thanks again.
