F1RS Modem Play

by Gian A. Vitzthu » Tue, 28 Apr 1998 04:00:00

Hi gang - I finally got the Monaco Tunnel pitch black problem solved: I had
to set my gamma settings to 3.10 in the autoexec :)  Originally, I didn't
think that they could be set over 1.95 because that was where the slider
stopped on the display menu in Win95 for the Monster 3D Settings and I had
read a post or two about maxing it out at 1.95.  All looks wonderful now and
I won't reduce the life of my monitor by keeping it at full brightness all
the time!

My question:
how does one play F1RS over a modem in Head to Head mode, or over the 'net
for that matter?  I have seen a detailed document in French from the
http://www.racesimcentral.net/
it... is there a version in English?

I have just the trial version of Kali... does one need to use that over the
'net to play with another person or are direct modem to modem connections
possible?  If so, how does one trick the modem into thinking it is an IPX or
does F1RS support such a connection natively?

Any info would be appreciated because the manual I have has ZERO information
about this...

Cheers,
Gian Vitzthum

There is no modem-to-modem in F1RS, just that split-screen thing for two
racers at the same machine.

Playing over the net requires Kali or some such IPX emulator, like Kahn.
If you have the trial version you get 15 minutes of time before you time
out.

Using Kali to race in F1RS is a pretty simple procedure.  Still, though it
may be simple, you need good pings to get a decent race going.  Believe it
or not, but Nascar 2 (that fine simulator released a few years back) runs
as well on the net as does F1RS.  It is tough sometimes getting a decent
race going.

Go to Kali's Where To Race server.  That is where most of us F1RS racers
meet.

Wrong!!! see my reply to message 101145. Using MS DUN you *can* race
f1rs via modem. And when I tried it, there was no noticeable lag, and
it played great.

Only mine? which is as follows.....

You need MS DUN (dial up networking) to be installed on both pc's, and
one of the pc's has to have the *plus* pack (I think?) to enable dial
up server (under the connection menu in DUN).

One pc goes into DUN & sets up a new connection, say call it "f1rs",
go into the new f1rs icon via right clicking on it and selecting
properties, then under general, type in the tel no' of the other
person. Under server types select ppp/win95/win nt, untick all the
advanced options (even software compression) and under allowed network
protocols select only the ipx box, none of the others, leave the
scripting screen blank.

The *other* pc goes into DUN and selects connections/dial up server,
and clicks on the server types button, then select ppp/win95/win nt,
and untick the advanced option (even software compression). Then
select ok, and select allow caller access, and sit back and wait for
your friend (at the other pc) to call.(Obviously you need to have pre
arranged a suitable time for the call).

NB:- make sure you have file sharing enabled on *both* pc's or it will
not work!

When the phone rings your pc's should connect automatically, and you
should then both go into f1rs and select multi player at the start.

The person dialling into the other player has to "create" a game on
entering f1rs (multiplayer), and the other player must then attempt to
"join" the created game.

It seems the person "creating" the game must do so, *before* the other
player tries to "join" (obvious really?) or else the game goes around
in circles and does not connect each player. Therefore the person
joining should wait a few seconds before attempting to join, to give
the other player time to create the game. So careful timing and
synchronisation of watches is required?

Thats it really, once the game has been created, and the other player
has joined, away you go, have fun..........

If you follow the above instructions you can play via modem (you are
fooling f1rs into thinking you are in fact on an ipx network?)
I think if you use this method *and* kali, you can connect up to 8
players (but I haven't actually tried that though? Does anyone else
know if that works......?)
