GPL ENGINE: what else can they do with it

by * Leon » Tue, 05 Oct 1999 04:00:00

OK

so GPL engine can't be a commercial success if they
use it for NASCAR 3,
THEN what else can be done with it ?

Every one likes it here , ( but not the market place )
so how about making an GPL editor and allowing
people to create skins, mods , tracks etc
then they could make up their own nascar3( GPL ).

How about that ??

that way no financial risk for Microprose and
everyone's happy

What does Microprose have to do with Grand Prix Legends?

As for the idea of an editor: I like it, but I doubt we'll see one any
time soon.

Well, in a way we do have one. There are plenty of addon's to GPL including new
tracks. Unfortunately that doesn't translate into a whole new sim.

Modern Sports Cars!
Something like SCGT with the GPL engine be great.

True, but those are all individual programs which can each be
downloading one at a time. I think that Leong was thinking more along
the lines of a single editor, which could do all of it.

For example, look at the Driver crack, which allows you to modify
virtually all aspects of the retail version and the demo. You could
choose which cars to use in each level, where your starting position
in the city was, where the police were, how intelligent the police
were, and even whether or not you wanted any police, and a hundred
other features, including weather selection.

That's the sort of thing I would like to see being built for more
simulators, such as Grand Prix Legends, Monaco Grand Prix Racing
Simulator 2, etc.

It would certainly be easier than downloading each file one at a time,
like we do for Grand Prix Legends.

Modern sports cars?  Id rather see old time sports cars.  Something based
around either 63-67 or 71-74.  Those were about the best stretches of endurance
racing i know of.  The 60s gives you the HUGE factory involvement at LeMans and
the like.  The 70s would give you the more radical new designs like the Porsche
"Pig Car" (the 917 i belive).  A Can-Am sim with the same engine would be
cool...especially if they include the Porsche+Audi with those huge 1200+ bhp.

I think if you took a vote, a brand spanking new CART sim that looked
like Sega's and handled like GPL would be top of the list.

How about...

Papy gives us all a poll to take.  It has the different forms of racing.
The top of the list is what's made first, then down the list respectivly.
But, The main game will not change, but the cars and tracks will (of course
vehicle information like weight etc).  Those will be add-on packs.  So the
base game for $40-50, and the add-on will be around $20-30.  I'm surprised
they haven't done anything like this.

Basically...the add-on will simply add more cars and tracks and upon game
startup, it will ask you if you want to drive these cars, or those in a pull
down list.  There will also be a checkbox asking if you want this screen to
come up everytime you start up.  So, you can set it to one if you don't want
to have to select it each time, and just go through options to change it.
Simple?  I think so.

This sounds very much like oh say, Microsoft Flight Simulator. :)  Be nice
if we could get something on the order of the MFS for racing.  I'd definetly
pay even more than 40 or 50 bucks, say upwards of a $100 for a high quality
extendable racing platform.  However, as nice as it sounds, the
implementation of it could be a nightmare.

How about modifying the GPL engine to be able to generate (or create a
program to do so) the physics given a certain set of numbers (of course,
you'd need a huge set of numbers, but GPL does have like, what, about 10
modifications on the physics model (one for each car))

You got my vote on that one!
I like NASCAR but it would be nice having another CART game. Also, I see
that much more suited to the GPL engine than a NASCAR game.

Yes, I distinctly remember an interview with Dave K. when he described the GPL
physics engine as being complete enough to plug in the specs of a different
type of car without having to start from scratch.

Problem is Sierra would rather warm over a cash cow like N1/N2 to make N3 than
turn the creative people loose with the GPL engine and give us really great
sims...like GPL.
