Dos or win 4 N99/GPL?

Dos or win 4 N99/GPL?

by Egomani » Thu, 31 Dec 1998 04:00:00

I am planning to do some online racing eventually after I get the hang
of these games and I have read that you can only race online if you
install these games through Dos. Is this true? If so, will this
sacrifice more from my system than installing through windows would?  I
would like to know what the differences are basically. Any input would
be much appreciated.

Also, on another subject I may not be able to get a wheel right away and
was curious if a controller would suffice me until I got a wheel? Saying
GPL won't be impossible without a wheel will it? If so, I guess I'll
just have to get the wheel and not eat for a week or so. :)

You are correct about GPL, certainly.  But N99 still uses DOS for its
multiplayer module.

Hmmm... the DOS thing is all wrong.  GPL (and I'd imagine N99)
are strictly Win9x programs.

Some people race GPL exquisitely using a joystick.  I have no
idea how they accomplish this <g>.

No, most modern games/sims are designed to be run under win9x, you do
not need to run them from dos, and in fact they may not run at all if
you try to run them from dos?

However, most older games/sims *were* designed to be run from dos. If
you are intending to race a fairly new game/sim it will almost
certainly run ok straight from win9x.

A wheel is certainly recommended for serious sims such as GPL,
however, there are many examples of people using joysticks, gamepads,
or various combinations of joystick, gamepad or wheel and pedals, and
they are still getting great lap times.

I would recommend though, that whatever controller you use, try to use
an analogue one rather than a digital one, as it will give you much
more precise control. And ensure the controller is calibrated
correctly both under win9x and in the game/sim itself.

Have fun, GPL on-line is a fantastic experience.

Not true.  During install you have the option of install DOS or Windows
.exe's.  Reason is for ONLINE play you MUST use the DOS .exe's.  That
doesn't mean you install it from DOS (not sure if you even can), it means
you have to run the DOS .exe!  I installed it on my computer from my wife's
computer because the install program wouldn't run from my Cyrix.  But the
DOS .exe ran just fine!  MAYBE, just maybe, Papy'll do a multiplayer patch
for the Win versions.

Besides being TERRIBLY difficult to drive this way, it's not very
immersive.  Save your $100 QUICK and get  a Nascar Pro.
