GPL and video cards

Because I put all my V3 3000s into computers I built for friends, I ended up
with a TNT2 Ultra with a TennMax fan left for myself. To run GPL I installed
the OpenGL patch and the game ran at 36fps even in 1280x1024 with max
detail. However, it still locked up after an hour or two. So I bought
another Voodoo 3000. I installed it and it seemed to run fine, but
eventually locked up again. I made sure no other resident programs were
running, but still no luck. I put in the latest 3dfx drivers (and lost my
ability to run at 1600 for some reason with the new drivers) and it
eventually still locked up. I was getting mad. I tried everything to no
avail. I thought, will I have to under clock this thing to make it stable?
Finally, out of frustration, I OC'd the Voodoo chip from 166 to 183 (the
speed of the 3500). Hmmm.... the card booted and ran okay, and the game
didn't lock up! Gee, that's really pushing the chip, but lets try 190mhz.
Ran great! 200mhz was too much, but I settled in at 195 and ran the game for
hours, then ran MTM2 (which gives good fps but is brutal on cards) and no
problem. A couple more hours on N3 and all is still fine. I do have a large
fan blowing on the video card and cpu as I always had, but I must have
really gotten lucky with this V3 3000. The max fps in MTM2 went from 120 fps
at 166mhz to 180 fps at 195mhz. What a boost.  I don't know why GPL locked
up when the V3 was not OC'd, but at this point I really don't care. I just
thought I'd share a bit of good news with this ng. Now, will it continue to
run good tonight?

Strange that a 17% increase in mhz has causes a 50% increase in fps.....

Looks like MTM2 isn't a very good benchmark.

I thought the same thing at first. Overclocking the Voodoo means that you oc
the core speed and the memory speed, and that much of an increase in memory
speed can show excellent results. Plus its true that MTM2 is very generous
with fps and it seems that once you get past a certain video speed there is
no more overhead and the fps jump right up. Maybe that accounts for the fact
that a TNT shows almost the same fps as a TNT2 Ultra. The highest resolution
for the game is 640x480, so that relieves some of the strain on video cards.
But the game has always amazed me that the graphics look so good at that
resolution, the trucks have actual round tires and wheel wells (not polygons
that are sort-of round), moving suspension, excellent textures, and can
still deliver frame rates as high as 125fps on a TNT card and 450Mhz
computer. Terminal Reality used something called Smacker Video Technology
for the game. MTM2 is an aging game, but I don't see why newer sims can't do
some of the same things. Imagine the look of N3 or GPL  or SCGT with real
round tires running at 1024x768 at 60fps!

So, no, MTM2 isn't a good benchmark (but GPL only goes to 37fps max. so I
couldn't use that as a benchmark) and yes, the fps drop by half when you
have 7 trucks in front of you. But if anyone doubts my findings, I'd be glad
to take some screen shots and email them.

I bet your V3 3000 has Hyundai (HY) memory on it ... does it?

Seems like most of the latest batch of V3's has this memory and it overclocks
like a sonofagun.  My V3 3000 perked right up and with no complaints at all.
Maybe 3dfx decided to give us a little Christmas present, along the lines of
what Intel did with their 300A Slot One Celeron.
