F1rs and 3d cards

Ha, just reading about all these problems people are having with f1rs and
various NON-3dfx cards.

I have a plain vanilla 3dfx card (around $200.00) nothing special, but it
runs f1rs just fine.

When I installed the game I came across the problem with f1rs saying I
didn't have a 3dfx card. So I installed the direct x version, What a load
of rubish this is! The frame rate sucks, the track looks like shit, the
mirrors don't work and various other problems make this wonderful game
almost unplayable.

I then discovered that the only diference between the directx and 3dfx
version is the executable. I manually copied f1voodoo.exe to my f1rs
directory and ran that. I instantly  got a huge performance increase and
all problems fixed. (except for lag on the first corner, but I think my
processor , p133, is to blame for that)

This game is just fantastic and 3dfx rules. My advice to all non 3dfx users
is, stop wasting your time, you do the game an injustice by running the
direct 3d version.

Well thats what I think anyway.

Hope you dont mind me jumping in here :)

If your asking if the game will run fine on your P150 with the Voodoo2
card (when it comes out), the answer will be a definite yes.  You wont
have to turn down any details, because the Voodoo2 card will handle
the load.
With a voodoo1 card, your machine can handle it pretty good, although
you would probably have to turn down the draw distance a notch or two.
Voodoo2's are reportedly 3 times faster, and will take nice load off
the machines processor, so I dont think you will have anything to
worry about.

Im running a P200 classic with a 3Dfx card, and it runs great with
full detail.

Phil,

Why wait a few months? Voodoo2 will be damned expensive here in
Australia. See if the Voodoos have dropped in price around your area
(I have seen Orchids for $280 with games)

FWIW, I run a 200mmx, 32MB ram, and a Herc Stingray 128/3D (dont
laugh, I couldnt afford two gfx cards after I bought a Sony monitor),
and it runs perfectly, I dont even get the first corner slowdown
(except at one point at Monaco)

yup

Apart from the first corner lag, no probs. Guess I'll have to wait till I
can afford a nice PII 300 before that gets better.......

Well, Howdy Stranger :-)

Are you in Sydney or over in WA, Nathan?

Cause if you are in Sydney, where have you seen the Orchid for that
price?

G'day Nathan.

Thanks might do that, not sure i can wait anyway just thought with my
machine P150 32mb EDO the voodoo2 would help a lot more.

yES !

I too hava P200 but w/ a Mystique card w/ 4 meg right now.

I just d/l the demo to try out but I just get a message "glide2x.dll
expected Voodoo Graphics, none detected."
(Is there anyway I can get it to work anyway for a look ?)

What card are u using in ur PC ?

Im thinking possibly the Diamond 3d, I was told that this card is close
to the performance of a Riva 128 card and the added bonus of being able
to recognize rendition(for Nascar2) and its also apparantly pretty
decent in 2d.

While Im droning on here, Im also thinking of moving up to a P233MMX
chipset.

Its assuring that a P200 along w/a proper 3dfx setup is going to work
and even better w/ the newer Voodoo 2 chipset(eventually).

With keeping to a PC budget, is it worth it more to go(waiting) w/ the
Voodoo2 chipset and leaving the P200 alone ? OR going w/ the P233MMX
along w/ a current 3dfx card(Voodoo 1 chipset)?

The demo only supports the Voodoo card natively (Glide), and it
doesn't run Direct3D, so can only run it with a 3Dfx card.  The actual
release runs the game much better than the "beta demo".

Im using the Orchid Righteous 3D card (3Dfx card)

I think you are talking about the Diamond Stealth II, which is around
$99+ US.  It is great in Direct3D (very close to Riva), and it will
run Rendition native games (ie. Nascar2, IndyCarII, some others also).
Its 2D performance is average.  But image quality in 3D is great.

If you can afford the extra few bucks, I would recommend getting a
3Dfx card - great speed and is leading in developer support.  There
will be a 3Dfx native port of Nascar2 sometime in early '98 (probably
Jan/Feb).

All depends if you dont mind waiting a bit.
You will be getting much more performance with a P200/Voodoo2, than
you would get from a P233MMX/Voodoo1.
Voodoo2 shoud arrive around March, so there is a little while to wait.
If you can't wait I'd suggest going for a Canopus Pure3D (a little
more expensive), or a Diamond Monster 3D, or if you want to save as
much as possible go for a Flash 3D.  They are pretty much all equal in
performance.

I'm happy with my P200 / Righteous setup with F1RS - I can live with
that first corner slowdown (just), but I was a lot happier before I saw
it running on my friend's Dell PII300 / Righteous.  It is STUNNING.
I've not seen anything like it.
Everything maxxed out and replays switched on and NO slowdown ANYWHERE.

This does make me think that the slowdown us mere mortals are
experiencing is a processor bottleneck.  Anyone got 2 grand going spare?

Happy New Year!

I'm in sydney, and the price was from Mindflux (who apparently
distribute them in Sydney)
