Can someone recommend a good arcade style racing game (or a sim with an
arcade option, i.e. N2), or a good action game, non third-person. And they
_must_ be 3D accelerated (mustn't everything? :) Thanks.

Many things are available.  What I use and didn't disappoint me is this:

- Wing Commander Prophecy: Space Combat Sim, VERY HOT, it's the best Sim-Arcade
game I know. The gameplay is awesome.  The graphics (with 3Dfx cards) is
totally UNBELIEVABLE!  And you can enjoy cinematics between missions.  If you
don't know Wing Commander, I suggest you also play WC1 through WC4 to know a
few caracters (Blair, Maniac,...) better which would make the game more
enjoyable.

- Jedi Knight (and new add-on Mysteries of the Sith):  Quake-like game (i.e.
first person), but this time you see where you put your feet (levels aren't so
dark!), you can use many weapons including the LIGHTSABER.  The Force is with
you with Force Powers that you can use to complete your destiny (jump, run,
sight, throw, grag, healing, pull, lightning, just to name a few).  Multiplayer
option for network, internet or modem play.  Very good game.  And the add-on
seems even better!

- F1 racing simulation: NOT AN ARCADE GAME, but an awesome F1 game!  Pilot as
Schumacher, Berger, ... any pilot of 1996 (Villeneuve is named Driver X in the
game) on all 16 1996 tracks.  Make adjustements on your car.  Very realistic
and very hard.  Graphics are very good, but since it is a F1 racing game, don't
think about seeing extravagant special effects.

- Shadows of the empire (stands between ESB and ROTJ): FULL ARCADE GAME.  Enter
the Battle of Hoth, then go on search of Boba Fett who still transport frozen
Han Solo to finally run after Xizor, a new villain, on CORUSCANT!  Good
graphics, good gameplay.  Play in first-third (you choose your prefered view)
person shooter, in space sim (snowspeeders, Millenium Falcon-like vessel).

- Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries 3Dfx Version:  Battle of the future in
skyscrapper-high robot.  Destroy other mechs or installations on ground battle
in different kinds of missions and earn money to buy new equiment and repair
your mechs.  Good graphics, good gameplay but the pace is a little slow for my
taste.

I think I'll try Andretti. I have NFS2SE and POD, they're great. F1 is a
sim, and Mech2 is too complicated. WCP, well, I can't control those flying
games, like Descent, I turn the mouse sensitivity all the way up and it
still turns to slow, even all the way up in Windows. Q2 works fine though.

Ugh! It's awful. If you want your racers to behave ANYTHING like real
veicles, avoid POD like the plague.

How do you get it. Someone told  me easy was just less intelligent AI. Does
it have different control, like arcade mode?

You say your looking for a good arcade style racing game and someone
mentions Pod. Then Joe goes ***ing that the cars dont drive like real
cars. Well it IS a ARCADE style racing game after all.

I love Pod...  However, I wasn't expecting a realistic racing simultion.  It
isn't marketed as a realistic racing sim, and doesn't claim to be.  It's an
excellent speed-filled arcade racing game.  It's great for those of us who are
frustrated by the real racing simulations, where a slight twitch to the
joystick when you're going at a decent speed sends you spinning out of control
every time, and where hitting a few cars (on purpose or by accident :) usually
means the end of the race for the player.

Pod is a racing ARCADE game with excellent control and gameplay.  It is not,
and doesn't CLAIM to be a realistic simulator.  (After all, how do you
simulate futuristic homemade cars on the "planet" Io?)

POD/3dfx...

Joe was tired when he wrote that... :-)

Daft, really - he posts to say that he doesn't agree with someones
opinion - and then slags POD off... "avoid it like the plague" is pure
poison (c)...

See - it's ok to say "it's not as bad as all that!" when someone
slags off some software... quite another matter to say "it sucks!"
when someone's just posted their honest good opinion...

For my regulars... it's the imperative use of the phrase "avoid it like the
plague" without the qualifying "then you may want/wish to... " that seems
tendentious.
